Maria Mehalah Macabre

The walk title makes reference to two women: Maria Marten, who was murdered by her lover in 1827, and Mehalah Sharland the heroine of a novel written by Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould in 1880.

The route starts in Polstead, the location of the 'Red Barn' where Maria Marten was murdered, passes through Colchester, takes permissive paths past Abberton Reservoir, crosses The Strood causeway to Mersea Island, the setting of the novel Mehalah, and finishes at East Mersea where Baring-Gould spent ten years as rector.
