Circular disc including a footprint inside an arrow, with the path name around the circumference.Dartmoor Way

Devon

172 km / 107 miles
In 2020, the Dartmoor Way was given a major overhaul and the information below replaces that of the previous entry. The route is now 107 miles long (previously 86): instead of the recommended starting and finishing point being at Buckfastleigh, this has now been amended to Ivybridge, due to it being mainline railway station that it is served by good bus connections. This new way travels along quiet footpaths, bridleways and little-used byways passing through many of the attractive towns and villages the nestle on the edge of Dartmoor.

The Dartmoor Way website has split the route into ten sections, with a further two making up the High Moor Link. These two sections make a 27 mile long link which allows users the option of enjoying either of the north or south circular routes as shorter walks. There are also six poor-weather alternatives to the main route. (Please note that the High Moor Link doesn't have poor weather alternatives.)

There are several relatively short sections of the route that are not waymarked, although these are predominately on some of the open moorland sections where it was felt inappropriate to install waymarks. Generally, these paths are good but it is suggested that these sections are undertaken in good weather conditions and that the user should be proficient in the use of map and compass.
