Lake Pickering Circuit

N Yorkshire

216 km / 134 miles
The Lake Pickering Circuit follows the higher land around the edges of the Vale of Pickering which was the site of a large glacial lake formed after the last ice age. The current route is based on the original one devised by John Eckersley whose guidebook has long been out of print. From Helmsley the Circuit takes in the market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Pickering and then heads to the coast where it briefly joins the Cleveland Way before turning back inland to pick up the Yorkshire Wolds Way and later the Centenary Way to reach the town of Malton. The Circuit continues to Kirkham, with ruins of an Augustinian priory, on past the stately home of Castle Howard followed by the ruins of Byland Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey after which the Cleveland Way is rejoined to lead back to Helmsley.
