The 2009 Oxon 40/20 took place on 2 May. It was a perfect day for a walk in the Chilterns and we had a record number of starters – 98 for the 40 and 246 for the 20, a total of 344. Underfoot it was dry, overhead it was a mixture of sunshine and light cloud, and the temperature reached 18 degrees in the early afternoon. After the cold winter the bluebells were back to their normal schedule and were just about at their peak. They yellow rape fields may not be to everyone’s liking but they made a strong contrast with the blue sky criss-crossed with vapour trails, and red kites wheeled above the walkers’ heads.

We’re pleased that once again there were no major mishaps, even if the record numbers put a strain on the car parking. The catering too was a little stretched: in Sonning Common Somerfields, conveniently next to the checkpoint in the Village Hall, doubled up as emergency food supplier. Reports that some exhausted arrivals seeing the well-stocked shelves thought Somerfields was the checkpoint and tried to get their card clipped at the checkout have not been positively confirmed.

Pat Endacott sends a Chairman’s vote of thanks to all who helped out. We’d also like to thank the local firms in Henley who lent us their car parking spaces: RPS Energy, Dalton Identification Systems, Videcom Ltd, and World Advertising Research Center. Thanks to you all. And the final thanks go to everyone who took part in such good spirit. Congratulations to the finishers, commiserations to those who didn’t manage to get all the way round. We look forward to seeing you all next year.
