Patterdale September 2017

London Group Lakeland trip September 2017.

Confirmed trip - still places available

A walking week is going ahead in the Lakes from Saturday 23rd September to Saturday 30th. The activity is of a strenuous nature and it is important that anyone joining the week is familiar with information at the Mountain Safe website http://www.mountainsafe.co.uk/site/en/advice/

The aim is to organise a led walk everyday from an arranged starting point and as often as practical visiting higher ground. But there is nothing to stop anyone doing their own thing or having a day off. Paul Lawrence has annually run a similar group trip in June but the date is later for 2017, and he is now well on with his second round of the 'Wainwrights'.

A number of London members have signed up so far and we have booked a large house in Patterdale just outside the village on a self-catering basis, sharing costs so it is quite cheap and we expect to have two cars. It's possible one more person might be squeezed into the house and there are places to stay both in the village nearby and possibly further away if you have a car. Accommodation does book up very early - Patterdale hostel (for instance) is already full on some of the proposed dates.

The week will follow the usual pattern of using walk start locations that can be reached by both car and possibly on some days by public transport from Patterdale. Some walks will start from the house. We aim to get to fells along the Hellvelyn ridge, where some scrambles may be possible, and around the Ullswater area where there are good ridge and lakeside walks, and possibly further away to Blencathra. If the weather is unkind, we do lower level walks.

If you are still interested, it's not too late to join on. The choice now is either to book your own accommodation and look after your own eating needs, or possibly to join in the house share if any space if left, with meals prepared on a shared basis. You are welcome for a few days if a week doesn't suit you - although that would probably be on the basis of looking after your own accommodation. A lift from say Reading is possible going up if you travel on the Friday (22nd) as Paul is going up a day early and staying in the Patterdale YHA for one night. This YHA is very near the house. If you come by train, either Penrith or Windemere are options from Euston, with a bus service that runs between Windermere - Patterdale village - Penrith. This is the 508 with timetables here. Buses run hourly but end at about 17.30 and take about an hour either way. The Penrith trains take about 3hrs and Windermere about 3.5hrs. Penrith trains don't link as well with the bus times going up.

If you would let Godfrey (gdocallaghan@gmail) or Paul (paulmlawrence.stats@gmail.com) know if you are interested together with your preferences and your likely dates we can register your plans and give you any more information and include you on any updates.
