Founders Challenge Saturday 6th October
Call for Marshals
Planning for this year’s edition of the London Group’s flagship challenge event is proceeding apace. In case you haven’t seen the trailed news (e.g. page 3 of the April Strider) there will be a new Start & Finish location in Guildford, two new anti-clockwise routes, a checkpoint in Peaslake and a new location for the final checkpoint in Shere. Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel remains as a stable pivot for the longer route!
We hope these changes will attract a keen field of 200 and as usual we need cheerful, welcoming, caring Marshals to make it the success that these marvellous routes deserve.
Experience is useful but lack of it is no bar to enthusiastic newcomers! There will be a wide range of roles:
- hospitality in Guildford and at the checkpoints (serving drinks, snacks, sandwich-making and offering!)
- applying basic smartphone skills using PACER at the same locations
- drivers
The Guildford HQ will be open from before 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. and we need people for the whole time – but not necessarily the same people! so it’s fine if you can only join us for part of the day. If you can get yourself to Guildford (trains from Waterloo at 0615, 0645 and 4 times/hr from 0715 take less than 40 minutes) we will get you to the checkpoints, although I know some will walk to Shere and Tanners Hatch.
The Marshals Walks – both routes! – will be led on 14th September.
If you are interested, able and willing or wanting more information please get in touch with Gordon Parker at founderschallenge@ldwa.org.uk He’s looking forward to hearing from you and keen to know your travel plans and arrival time!

London LDWA Chair Ali Pretty has several strings to her bow, one of which is involvement in Thurrock's annual 100 festival.
Taking place between 6-20 July, T100 - Welcome to the Kitchen Table aims to connect diverse communities along the River Thames, sharing food and recipes as a way of starting conversations, finding out what different groups have in common and sharing an understanding of diverse cultures. For this, Ali is leading the walks as a 15-day pilgrimage which London Group's Colin Saunders has helped with on the Kent side.
You can find all the details of what's on offer at http://thurrock100.com/2019-walks/
