London LDWA

Hello everyone

Well the icy blast over the last few days certainly reminds us that it's December already.   And if the Daily Express is to be believed, our old friend the sinking polar vortex means that we're headed for the coldest winter in decades.   So - that should guarantee it will be T-shirts and shorts all the way till next June.

Anyway, with that cheering thought in mind, lets turn straight to this week's walk programme.  Yes, there are a couple of notices as well, but they can come later.

First on the agenda this week is another of "Pop-Up Ron"'s midweek daytime specials.   This time, on Wednesday, he is heading out to the "hills of the north" - which sounds tremendously Shackletonian.   His 12-mile alpine expedition sets out from Kings Cross station at 11.00 on Wednesday morning.   He's going to be visiting the Regent's Canal, Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill and is guaranteed to be an excellent opportunity to give those new cross-country skis you promised yourself for Christmas an early outing.

Don't know why they've got the wrong flags, though?

And as if that wasn't enough, on Saturday, Peter will be heading out to the wild east, and promises, somewhat unusually, to be leading us on a backwards walk along the Saxon Shore.   So it sounds like we're flirting with both Shackleton and Python this week and if you're intrigued as to exactly what this might entail, there's only one way to find out.   Yes - you just need to make your way to Strood station for 09.30 on Saturday morning, (and it would be prudent to bring along a torch as darkness is likely to descend before the finish of the walk).   You might also note Peter's enticements abouts castles, estuaries and pubs in the walk notes below!

Now at the start of this email, you were promised a couple of our famous Notices, too, so here they are:

1 A plea...

Could you lead a midweek evening walk next summer?

Yes believe it or not we are currently trying to fill our walks programme for the summer of 2018 (i.e. 1 May to 31 August).

All the weekend slots are taken now, and we've got an exciting variety of LDWA-distance Saturday and Sunday walks laid on.   But now we are trying to arrange some shorter evening midweek walks, too.   Usually we try and run a full- or almost-full programme during the summer months and at the moment we still have some gaps left, listed below.

So if you feel you'd like to lead a shorter (5-8 miles, normally) walk one midweek evening, please just pick a date from the list and reply to this email to "bag" it.   These walks are an excellent introduction to leading for potential new leaders, so don't feel afraid of volunteering if you've never done it before.

They normally start between 6:00 and 6:30 pm so people can go after work.   Your walk details wouldn't be needed till the middle of January.

Here are the dates that are available.

Pick one and reply to this email to reserve a slot!

  • Tue 08 or Wed 09 or Thu 10 May 2018
  • Tue 22 or Wed 23 or Thu 24 May
  • Tue 29 or Wed 30 or Thu 31 May
  • Tue 12 or Wed 13 or Thu 14 Jun
  • Tue 26 or Wed 27 or Thu 28 Jun
  • Tue 10 or Wed 11 or Thu 12 Jul
  • Tue 17 or Wed 18 or Thu 19 Jul
  • Tue 24 or Wed 25 or Thu 26 Jul
  • Tue 21 or Wed 22 or Thu 23 Aug
  • Tue 28 or Wed 29 or Thu 30 Aug

And everyone reading this might want to take a look at the walks programme for next summer, which you can do by clicking here.

2 And finally!

If you bought a copy of Colin’s London Loop book at the book launch event last week, please check the dedication inside, and if it says ‘Happy walking Susanne’ you have the wrong copy!

If so, please email colin.saund@btconnect.com to arrange a swap.

Phew!   Time for a quick lie-down now!

All the best and have a great week waxing those skis.

Adam
