London LDWA

Dear all

Suffering in the Novembral gloom?   Feeling SAD?   Well here's something to banish the blues.   Yes - we haven't had a caption competition for ages so I thought it was about time we had one.   So get your minds into creative gear and read all about it below.

Oh, and yes!  we have a fantastic walk laid on next weekend, too.   What could possibly be better!

A fabulous* prize**-winning opportunity!

Well - I was fortunate enough to be out and about in the Oxfordshire countryside last week, wallking part of the Chiltern Way Extension.   Along the route, I came across this fascinating architectural feature and I immediately knew that the collective brainpower of the London LDWA would to be able to come up with a suitably apt caption to describe the scene:

Easter eggs in grass

In a farmyard just outside Goring
Seen better days?

All you have to do if you want to enter is to reply to this email with a suitably witty caption.

The winner will be selected by me using a sophisticated evaluation system (I'm not at liberty to disclose details, I'm afraid) and announced in next week's email.

* The term "fabulous" is a matter of subjective interpretation

** I haven't completely decided what the prize will be yet, but aside from being fabulous, it may involve Wetherspoons (and no that isn't necesarily a contradiction in terms).

So now let's get our feet back on the ground and turn to this week's walking adventures.

Our excursion this week is a joint outing with Kent group on Saturday, exploring the environs of Otford - renowned for many things but possibly most notably for its 1:4,595,700,000 map of the solar system.   This will be a great opportunity to see this remarkable object, in case you missed it in one of our earlier visits this year.   The joint walks with Kent have always been popular and successful, so if you'd like to join in, all you have to do is to get to Otford station for 09.28 on Saturday morning, where our leader, Helen, will meet you

[NB you are asked to to take care to check train times especially carefully before setting off as timings on this line have been subject to last-minute variation lately, and please note also the request to bring a torch as the walk will finish after sunset, at around 17.30]

Now - a final notice before we close:

Budding authors take note!

Here's a reminder that on Wednesday 29 November, Peter and Colin will be talking to us about their recent book publications.  Here are the details, so make sure you come along for what promises to be a really interesting evening!

  • Wednesday 29 November
  • 6.30pm for 7pm, The Cambria, 40 Kemerton Rd, Camberwell SE5 9AR
  • Nearest rail: Loughborough Junction (250m)
  • Nearest tube: Brixton (1km)

Peter's guide for Cicerone Press, Walking in London: Park, heath and waterside walks, brings together 25 walks in green spaces across the capital. Members might remember that Peter cunningly got London LDWA to check the draft route descriptions for him over several of his recent walk leads.

Colin's Aurum Press guide to the London Loop is a complete re-survey of this 150-mile route around outer London, which often features in London LDWA walks. Colin includes some optional variations to the original route where better alternatives have emerged since the Loop was launched more than 20 years ago.

Well - that's all for now!   Have a good week and I can't wait to see what creative genius the caption competition will unleash!

Adam

Event Details:

Event Details Updated
Update 12/11 • Transport: The train time from London stated in Strider and on the LDWA site is still the same according to thetrainline, arriving at Otford, 9:28am.It still costs the same to park in the car park. • Start time: The walk will be leaving promptly at 9:30. This is because the pub chosen for lunch operates a 'winter schedule' in the kitchen, so we need to arrive and have our orders in before the kitchen closes. I will be telephoning the landlord/lady of the Crown Inn, Shoreham, on the morning to book enough spaces for the walkers who want to eat on the premises. • Finish time: the estimated time for finish is 5:30pm. Please could you let members know that the walk will be finishing at dusk, and so as a precaution I would like people to bring torches for their personal safety at the end of the walk.
