London LDWA

Dear all

Well, I hope you all enjoyed your lie-in yesterday morning.   I like to think of the switch from BST to GMT as giving us one 24th of a Bank Holiday, which I suppose is some small compensation for the darker evenings which are upon us now.

But, right on cue, Ron has once again been weaving some of his pop up magic, so despite the official advent of Autumn, we have not one, but two fabulous walks on offer for you this week.   Please try to contain your excitement and read on!

Yes on Friday our resident pop up artist and escapologist, Ron will be leading us on a repeat of last year's highly successful "Escape from Romford" walk.  It's another midweek daytime special, which will appeal to anyone fortunate enough to have got the day off.   So if you fancy fitting in an 11-miler on what will undoubtedly be a sunny end to the week, please just make your way to Romford station for 10.15 on Friday morning.   Ron promises the opportunity to crunch through town and country parks en route, and what better way could there be to whet your appetites for that pint of Theakston's Pink Grapefruit Seasonal ale that awaits you at the inevitable Wetherspoons visit at the end?

But what else have we in store....

Well - on Sunday, Julie will be leading us on a walk which will be celebrating the life and times of Bobby Moore (a footballer).   She's departing from Upton Park tube station at 09.00 on Sunday morning, and visiting football grounds and other important sites related to this iconic national figure.   It sounds like a fabulous walk - even if you're not a football fan - though please note firstly that the walk details have changed significantly since "Strider" went to press, and secondly that it's likely to be dark at the end, so you are asked to bring a torch.   The darkness does mean though that you may be able to enjoy some of the early firework displays towards the finish of the walk.   The updated, correct, walk details are on the website and are reproduced below.

 O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
 The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
 The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
 While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
   But O heart! heart! heart!
     O the bleeding drops of red,
       Where on the deck my Captain lies,
         Fallen cold and dead.

So on that reflective note, I'll finish and wish you all a highly enjoyable week.

Adam
