London LDWA

Hello everyone!

So it's October already!   The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is almost upon us - but before we bid farewell to the last vestiges of summer, there's one more important event to fit into our walking calendars.

Yes - it's less than a fortnight to our annual "Founders'" challenge hike, and you've still got time to enter!   This fabulous event is centred around peaceful Peaslake, Surrey and this year sees its coming-of-age, as the event hits its 21st anniversary.

So before we get stuck into this week's social walk calendar, let's have a quick "Founders' refresher"...

LDWA London 21st "Founders'" Challenge

Saturday 14 October 2017

There are still places available for the Founders Challenge on Saturday 14th October which is now less than 2 weeks away! A full team of 27 volunteer Marshals are waiting to welcome you to the beautiful Surrey Hills. There's a choice of running or walking 27 miles or walking 16 miles: something to suit everyone!

Engineering works mean the rail schedules are not yet finalised but the best trains to get you to the start are most likely the 07.23 from Victoria or 07.35 from Waterloo, arriving at Guildford at 08.16.

If you need transport from Guildford Station please inform Gordon Parker at:
founderschallenge@ldwa.org.uk
as soon as possible.

If you can offer a lift at that time from Guildford please also let Gordon know.

Now - let's have a look at this week.

First of all, on Wednesday, Ron is leading one of his famous midweek daytime "pop up" walks.   The details are below, and also on the website, but in summary, his excursion promises to explore that part of darkest Essex that lies between the A12 and A127 trunk roads.   Well - it certainly sounds a bit different, so if you're fortunate enough to be free during the day on Wednesday, you will find Ron waiting for you at Ingatestone Station at 10.15. You will particularly want to note the prospect of Wetherspoons at the end.

Moving on..

At the weekend, we're showcasing the final missing link in Rob's trilogy of parkland walks.   You may recall that Rob has been walking parts of the London Parks way - in reverse - and this week brings us the final instalment in the series.   So Saturday's walk includes notable landmarks like Hampton Court and Richmond Park, and also offers multiple deer-spotting opportunities.   If you'd like to go, all you have to do is make your way to Hammersmith Station (Hammersmith Broadway entrance) for 09.00 on Saturday morning.

Now one final thing - you'll all remember that over the last few days, LDWA London has been heavily involved in the "Silk River" walking project, along the banks of the Thames.   I'm delighted to report that the event was a huge success, with some 20 LDWA London members joining in some or all of the ten daily walks.

Colin has written an excellent report on the proceedings, which we're just in the process of uploading to our website.   So watch this space - we'll let you know when it's ready.

Anyway - that's it for now - have a great week and don't forget to put your name down for Founders'!!

Adam
