London LDWA

Hello everyone

Here's a spolier alert - there are no fewer than FOUR LDWA London walks this week, so this email is a bit of a blockbuster!   That being the case, you might want to get a coffee and find a quiet spot out of the boss's gaze for a few minutes, and settle down for a good read.

Now that memories of the heady days of summer are slowly beginning to fade, it's a great time to start thinking about our Autumn walks programme.   And of the many highlights coming up this season, our flagship event is sure to be the annual "Founders'" challenge walk, being held this year on Saturday 14 October.   We're inviting both participants and volunteers to come forward now, as the box below explains:

The 21st LDWA London "Founders'" Challenge

Participants and helpers are invited!

Taking part

One of the many highlights of LDWA London's year is the annual "Founders'" challenge hike.

This splendid walk in the Surrey hills visits many of the spots associated with the founding of the LDWA (hence the name) and comes in 16 mile and 27 mile flavours.   As ever, there is excellent catering to enjoy along the route and particularly at the end, so this is an event not to be missed!.

If you'd like to take part, you can enter on-line by clicking here.   You can also find out more about the event itself, including the history, route, and other administrative details, by clicking here.

Lending a helping hand

Preparations for this year's Founders Challenge are going well. But an additional half dozen marshals would be really helpful so if you haven't volunteered already, please think about it and decide whether you could help on Saturday 14th October.

We can offer indoor, outdoor and mixed roles (and although IT skills would help they are not necessary!).

If you are concerned about getting to Peaslake then just let the event organiser, Gordon Parker, know and he will try to arrange a lift for you.

To volunteer, please contact Gordon by emailing him at this address:

founderschallenge@ldwa.org.uk

Details of the Founders' Marshals walks next weekend - intended for everyone who's helping at the event and so won't be able to participate on the day - are included further down this email.

Thanks!

Before returning to the Founders', in the form of the Marshals' walks, let's not forget that first, on Wednesday evening, Colin will be exploring some of the footpaths and bridelways of the Hertfordshire Chain Walk.   The "HCW" is a longer path running roughly north from London into Cambridgeshire and Colin will be making a circular route including sections of the southern end.   To join the excursion, take the train to Crew's Hill Station for 18.15 on Wednesday, where Colin will meet you.   Note that as the evenings are beginning to get a little darker now, Colin suggests you might want to bring a torch along on this walk.

Completing the week (aside from the Marshals', which we'll come to in a minute), on Sunday, Peter will be leading an 18 mile hike through the eastern Chilterns from Chorleywood to Amersham.   It's a beautiful part of the world, and this is guaranteed to be an excellent walk.   If you'd like to go, then join Peter at Chorleywood station at 09.24 on Sunday, noting that the start time has been pushed back by half an hour compared with "Strider", as the original train is no longer running.

And now let's come back to Founders' because this weekend, on Saturday we've got two walks for our Marshals lined up:

The Founders' challenge has both 16 and 27 mile options, and this coming weekend, we will be leading Marshals' walks over both routes.   Therse walks are primarily aimed at those who will be helping on the day, and so won't be able to participate in the event itself.   If your'e not marshalling but would like to explore the route, then of course just come along and join in the event on 14 October!

The 16 mile Marshals' meets on Saturday at Gomshall Station at 10.03, and will be led by Catherine.

The 27 mile Marshals' meets on Saturday at Ranmore Common carpark (near "Steers Field"; grid ref TQ 14144 50378) at 09.00 OR at 08.24 at Dorking Station from where lifts will be provided.   Douglas will be doing the honours and leading this walk.

Note that for both walks, although they cover the complete Founders' routes, the starting points are NOT the same as on the Challenge event itself - which begins at Peaslake village hall.   Further, in the interests of time, you are asked to bring packed lunches with you on both walks.

Well, I think that's more than enough to be going on with for now, so I'll sign off.

Enjoy the week, and try not to feel too glum about the back-to-earth-with-a-bump realisation that the summer holidays are over and the world of work looms large once again.

Adam
