Hello everyone!

You can always tell when the school holidays have started - the heavens open, the temperature plummets and the sun disappears.   But even in the gloomiest of conditions, the landscape continues to entice.   Here's the view from Parliament Hill on Charles' walk last Wedneday - and yes, it really is August and not November!

Blazing summer

Summer was on a Wednesday this year I think..
..unfortunately not last Wednesday - this was the view from the top of Parliament Hill on Charles' splendid tour of Hampstead Heath. Here's hoping for improving weather for our walks this week!

Anyway, things can only get better, as our politicians like to remind us, and this week we'll be out and about again on two splendid walks which are sure to shine, no matter what the weather throws at us.

First on our agenda this week, on Tuesday evening, Peter will be taking the opportunity to explore some of Kent's unusual mediaeval "anti gentrification" defensive ditches, down in Joyden's Wood near Bexley.   This sounds like a live episode of the Time Team with a six mile walk thrown in - and what better way could there be to spend what will undoubtedly be a balmy (and definitely not barmy) August evening?   If you'd like to join, take the train down to Bexley Station and meet Peter there at 18.00 on TUESDAY evening.

And second, on Saturday, Neil will be out and about again, this time leading us on a 23 mile traverse of the South Downs.  His route follows the South Downs Way from Lewes to Eastbourne and, rather horrifyingly, offers the prospect of a swim in the sea at the end.   Somewhat less intimidating will be the refreshment stops at Alfriston and Birling Gap along the way.   If all this sounds too good to miss, then get a quick workout to refine the beach body and make your way to Lewes station for 10.00 on Saturday.

So, leaving that interesting but unusual thought in your minds, I will sign off for now.

Have a great week, and enjoy it whatever the weather brings!

Adam
