London LDWA

Hello again, everyone!

It's hard to believe that its midsummer already - and we've got lots on this week to celebrate the solstice, albeit in a non-Druidic way.   Yes we've got a midweek evening walk on the solstice itself this Wednesday, and then no fewer than two "pop up" walks (i.e. not in "Strider") on Saturday.

But before we get onto these excitements, I need to bring a couple of Rather Important Announcements to your attention:

LDWA London
Challenge events 2017 and 2018

21st Founders Challenge: Call for volunteers
Sat 14 October 2017

Please put Saturday 14th October in your diary so that you can either enter the 21st Founders Challenge or help us on the day, as a Marshal.

If you have walked with the London Group during the year and want to give something back, or if you want to find out more about Challenge Walks and witness one from the inside, mashalling is a great opportunity to do just this.

For keen volunteers, we offer a variety of roles, indoors and outside in the beautiful Surrey hills. Greeting and refreshing walkers at the checkpoints is one key role but others involve directing car parking and, keeping track of entrants and their times and, perhaps above all, catering.

This year we are looking for someone to take responsibility for catering - it's an important role and does take a modest amount of time in the days immediately before the event.   But there will be lots of support available before and during that time, so the challenge won't be daunting.

Everybody who takes part agrees that it is a hugely enjoyable experience so please don't be shy about volunteering to help in any capacity at all. We can advise on travel and offer lifts to the walk HQ at Peaslake from local stations.

If you would like to help, please contact Gordon Parker by email at founderschallenge@ldwa.org.uk

2nd Capital Challenge: Date announcement
Sat 7 April 2018

A new date for your diaries!

Yes, the second Capital Challenge walk will be held on Saturday 7 April 2018

Further details will follow shortly.   But here are some highlights:

  • A 28 mile hike through London's finest parks and architecture
  • Starts on the South Bank, under Waterloo bridge
  • Finishes near the Olympic Park in Stratford
  • All entries will be on-line, via SI Entries
  • This year, the entry limit will be doubled to 200 participants
  • You can read about last year's event by clicking here
  • Details will be available on SI Entries at the end of October, and we expect that entries will open on
    1 December 2017
  • There'll be an announcement on the website and in this weekly bulletin once entries open
  • As ever - just as with the Founders' in October (see above), we will be on the lookout for willing volunteers to help at the checkpoints on the day..

So now let's move on to this week's walks.

The first point to note is that unfortunately, Saturday's "Vikings and UFOs" walk has been CANCELLED.
But there are two pop-up walks that day to take its place.

But even before we get to, Saturday, on Wednesday, Alan will be leading a wander through some of the finest West London parks, passing close to the route of the early part of the Capital Challenge hike, actually.   His excursion will start at 18.00 at Regent's Park tube, and finishes at Westminster.   It's slightly longer than most of our midweek evening walks, at 9 miles, but as it's the shortest night of the year, that seems particularly appropriate.

Midsummer

Midsummer madness

Then we get to Saturday, when in place of the Vikings walk, we are offering two "pop-up" walks instead.

Our first offering is a bit of an unusual one, as it starts at the eye-wateringly improbable time of 04.30 at North Greenwich tube (NB accessible via night-tube).   Colin is going to be leading this walk, starting at dawn, as it heads west along the Thames Path for up to 40 miles, aiming to finish near Weybridge at sunset.   It's a dry run for a possible challenge walk he's thinking of developing at some point, so if you're up for it, this would be an excellent event to support.   Colin does ask that you drop him an email or a quick call (details below) if you are likely to be going, so he has some idea of probable numbers.

But if you prefer to enjoy a leisurely cup of tea in bed before hitting the trail, then we also have a slightly more realisitc option for you on Saturday.   Making the most of the long days and warmer weather, Jerome will be leading a 20 mile circular walk from Tring station, meeting at 09.00.  His walk will be taking in the hills, woods, canals and ancient byways of the beautiful Chiltern Hills, and even promises a visit to a chocolaterie en route - which must be a first for the LDWA.

So, with all this on offer, there's sure to be something that fires your imagination.   Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts!

Have a great week

Adam
