London LDWA

Hello everyone

Happy Bank Holiday!

Well although meteorologists and calendarians may disagree, according to the definitive LDWA annual walks programme, 1 May officially marks the start of the summer season.   So we can confidently (if recklessly) adandon our waterproofs and thermals and don our shorts instead, and head out into the hills.

So if hill-heading is how you'd like to mark the start of the new season, we've got a couple of great outings lined up for you this week.   All the details follow below, but first, I bring you another of those Important Notices which crave your attention:

The Action Challenge - any volunteers?

London LDWA has received an approach from Action Challenge, a challenge events company who set up mass-participation long distance walking events.

They are seeking people who would be willing to volunteer to walk around 25 to 50 km on the night stages of two forthcoming events:

  • the London to Brighton hike on 27-28 May ( click here ) and
  • a Thames hike from Fulham to Henley on 9-10 September ( click here ).

Each event is expecting several thousand walkers, with proceeds to charity; the role of the volunteers is to support the walkers, who may not be used to long-distance walking, especially at night.

The LDWA London committee agreed that we would put this out for interest to our members, with anyone interested to contact not the LDWA but Action Challenge via Tom Walker on 020 7609 6695 or tom.walker@actionchallenge.com

THE YORKSHIRE "100"

Note that the London to Brighton walk falls on the same weekend as the LDWA's national "100" challenge hike in North Yorkshire, and we're still on the look out for volunteers to help out up there.   If you'd like to do your bit on this vital LDWA flagship event, please click this link to find out more.

So - now let's move on to the week's activities.

First on the schedule, on Thursday, Jerome is taking us on a tour of three parks in West London.   His evening walk visits Crane, Fulwell and Bushy Parks (at least two of which are less well known hidden gems located along the course of the equally well hidden River Crane) which must surely merit an evening's exploration.   If you'd like to go, just make your way to Twickenham station for 18.00 on Thursday evening and take it from there.   Please note the point about dogs on this walk.

And then on Saturday, Dave will be leading the first in what may become a series of walks linking up over the summer to form a complete circumnavigation of London via the London Countryway.   This is a fascinating less well known alternative to the Capital Ring and the London LOOP circuits, and on Saturday, Dave will be exploring the clockwise section from Gravesend to Borough Green.   To join this pioneering jouney, take the train on Saturday morning to Gravesend station where Dave will meet you at the southern entrance at 09.25.

So - that's it for now.   Enjoy the rest of your day off, and prepare to bare those lardy legs to the rest of the world!

All the best

Adam
