London LDWA

Hello everyone!

Here we go again - another week ahead of us, but lots to look forward to from London LDWA.   And with the prolonged dry spell, the ground underfoot is becoming mud-free and the walking is excellent.

So we've got a fabulous couple of walks laid on this week, to help lure you out into the spring sunshine (and the countryside is looking truly lovely at the moment).
But first, as is becoming the norm nowadays, an Important Message which needs your attention (and I promise it won't take long):

Masterchefs - your chance for glory!

You will probably recall that every October, LDWA London runs a highly successful "Founders'" Challenge hike.   One of the stand-out features of the event is the excellence of the catering which we offer to lucky participants.

For 2017, we're looking for someone (or perhaps a couple of people) to take on responsibility for co-ordinating our catering activites, and thus helping to maintain our culinary reputation.

Note - we will be seeking checkpoint marshals and marshals to assist in general catering duties later in the year.   At this stage what we're looking for is one or perhaps 2 people to take on the overall catering co-ordination role.

This role is responsible for:

  • planning a menu for the meal at the end (typically soup, a ploughman's and a pie & custard dessert.   Yum :-) )
  • organising checkpoint snacks
  • doing the food shopping
  • directing the catering team on the day

If you think you would like to help out, please either email the Founders' Co-ordinator by clicking here or just reply to this email.

There is plenty of experience and information available to help anyone who's interested, and experts such as Chris K. will be on hand will be able to offer practical advice.   So please don't hold back, and do get in touch!

Right, so let's get down to business now.   Yes - this week's walks.

Now we're into the season of longer days, we're in the routine of offering two walks per week, and this week we've got a couple of good ones lined up for you.

Our first excursion is on Wednesday  when our renowned escapologist Ron will be leading a 13 mile daytime walk promising to "escape" from Wickford to Billericay via 13 miles of beautiful rural Essex countryside.   Although Ron threatens mud along the route, I think there is every chance it may be at least semi-solid by now, so potentially not too hazardous for your new gore-tex boots.   If you'd like to join Ron on his journey, and are lucky enough to have got the day off, make your way to Wickford station for 10:35 on Wednesday morning.

Then, rounding off the week nicely, on Saturday, Andy will be taking us on a leg-stretching 20 mile circular hike across the South Downs from the delightfully Miss Marple-ish Plumpton to visit key sights along the South Downs Way, including the equally delightful-sounding Jack and Jill windmill, Wolstonbury Hill and Black Cap.   If you'd like to go, then meet Andy at Plumpton station at 09.16 on Saturday morning.   Please note the important reminder to meet on the station platform and not outside the station.   Some further walk notes have recently been added to the website and are reproduced below.

Well that's it for now.   Have a great week, and let's hope the dry weather lasts (unless you're a gardener of course in which case let's somewhat incompatibly hope for persistent heavy rain).

All the best!

Adam
