London LDWA

Hello everyone

We've got a lot on this week, so I'd better get straight down to business.   Yes, there are no fewer than THREE walks heading out over the next few days, so let's start at the beginning:

1. Basildon highlife (Wed 1 Mar)
This one of our increasingly-popular midweek daytime walks, for anyone who's lucky enough to have to the day off work.

Ron will be leading this particular excursion on Wednesday, seeking out the exhilarating heights of the Essex mountains (well, that's what he tells me).   To join this extraordinary journey, just be at Laindon Station at 10.25 on Wednesday morning.   I'm not sure if crampons and ropes will be strictly necessary, but seeing as a visit to Wetherspoons is on offer at the end, they might actually be a useful addition to your normal packing list.

2. Capital Challenge Marshals (Sat 4 Mar)
This walk is ONLY for people who have agreed to marshal on the Capital Challenge on 1 April.
If you haven't volunteered yet, but would like to, see the website (click here) for more details.

So if you have signed up to help and want to do the Marshals' hike, first of all let Gordon know by emailing him at capitalchallenge@ldwa.org.uk.
Then make your way to the BFI Southbank (riverside entrance underneath Waterloo Bridge) on Saturday morning.   Because it's quite a long hike, at 27 miles, we will be making an early start, so you'll need to be there bright eyed and bushy tailed at the the eye-poppingly early time of 08.00 am on Saturday morning.   And despite the early start, it is still likely to be dark at the end, so take a torch.

3. Tring Circular (Sun 5 Mar)
Our third walk this week takes us back to Hertfordshire, and specifically to Tring - an area we haven't explored for a little while, so well worth going back.

Steve will be leading us on this circular exploration of the hills, trails and canals around Tring - and very lovely they are, too.   To be there, just get to the fabulous Tring station (pictured below) for 09.29 on Sunday morning.   And, even though the station bridge offers top class trainspotting opportunities (not that that this sort of thing interests me of course), you'll just have to drag yourselves away if you're going to make it back to Euston at a reasonable hour in the evening.

The rather gorgeous ticket office at Tring station
One of the less well known features of this station is that it is not actually in Tring

So - hopefully there's something in our programme this week to excite everyone.   But if you need a little more information to help you decide which path (or paths) to follow, just check out the website or scan the details below.

But that's all for now.   Have a fantastic week!

Capital Challenge Marshals (MARSHALS ONLY!)

Sat 4th Mar 2017

Event Details:

Event Details Updated
Updated 15/2 with details of the walk and volunteering instructions for potential Marshals.

Event Type
Group Walk

Region
Southern England

Local Group
London

Distance
27ml.

Start Time
08.00

Route
* Meet outside the BFI on South Bank, under Waterloo Bridge.
* Note this walk is ONLY for those who have registered interest in Marshalling at the 2017 Capital Challenge, being held on Sat 1 April.
* If you would like to help, please see the website (https://www.ldwa.org.uk/London/W/4606/2017.html) or email the organiser (capitalchallenge@ldwa.org.uk
* We'll all set off together at 8 o'clock but if you want to go at a faster pace than us leaders, both fresh from the antipodean summer so possibly not as walk-fit as some of you, please feel free to complete the route under Challenge Walk conditions – but bring a copy of the Route Description and, if that's your style, the route on your GPS.
* But do bring the RD too as it has info about toilets, shops, points of interest, etc.
* Certificates will be presented to marshals completing the walk but, especially as the cafe at the Finish will also be closed, those of you who forge ahead may be on Walkers Honour to report your finishing time to me: I'm not certain I can get anyone to sit and wait for us there!
* Travel advice for getting home can be found at the end of the RD. And, given no finish line refreshments will be available, keep something in the tank for the additional final mile to Stratford: the local Pudding Mill DLR station (and Hackney Wick station) are closer but don't have any refreshments.

General Notes
* The cafe will NOT be open so pick up a coffee from Waterloo Station beforehand or wait until we pass through Paddington Station (thermos flasks are also available at your local store).
* As sunset is still quite early (1746) we will want to keep breaks short so bring snacks, sandwiches etc for the day so we can keep it flexible according to weather and what's open.
* We'll aim for a brisk pace but see also note above.
* Bring a TORCH. It could be dark for the final stretch.
