Your LDWA needs you for North Yorkshire 100 Friday 26th May to Sunday 28th May

Hello All

It is that time of year again when thoughts turn to the annual 100 mile walk. This year it is in North Yorkshire and London Group has offered to help run one of the check-points.

Once again, Susanne Walschmidt has agreed to lead the London team and she has asked me to send out the following request for volunteers. So, if you are not actually doing the walk and would like a fun and interesting time in North Yorkshire, then please respond to Susanne volunteering to help.

Volunteers needed for Breakfast Stop Checkpoint at Robin Hood’s Bay

The North Yorkshire 100 will start/finish in Malton, about 20 miles North East of York.  Our  Checkpoint (Number 10 at about the halfway point) will be at Fyling Hall School half a mile from Robin Hoods Bay.

This is a stunning location with some fantastic coastal walking.  Not only is Robin Hoods Bay a Mecca for geologists but the charming little coastal village, with its quaint hostelries, was once the haunt of smugglers.  Sadly Wetherspoons never had much truck with smugglers so you will need to go to Scarborough to get your fix.   As always the weekend will include at least 1 Social Walk.

London LDWA is tasked to perform checking in/retirement and breakfast baggage duties.  We will also need to make sure the loos and shower rooms are presentable at all times.  Fortunately we will NOT have to do any cooking.  East Lancs are the caterers and if last year is anything to go by the breakfasts should be good.

The check point is open from Saturday 2340 to Sunday 1420.  This will be split into two 7.5 hour shifts.

Our multi-skilled forces have faced many challenges in the past and I am sure our legendary grace and humour will be a great asset.  What can be better for our 100 stalwarts than to be meeted and greeted by our Luverley London Group.

Now the practical stuff.

The cheap option.

There will be a room set aside at headquarters for volunteers, which will be available from Saturday midday to Sunday afternoon.  You will need a sleeping bag and mat.

If you want accommodation on Friday and/or Sunday nights the cheapest option is Scarborough YHA.

The cost is £15/night for non-members and £12/night for members.  As I will have the LDWA Group ID which entitles us all to the cheaper price put down that you are a member and also mention that you are with the LDWA group.  There is plenty of availability at the moment but it is important that you book ASAP to be sure of getting in.   Remember this is a VERY busy period.   I am already booked in so you will not be alone.  The hostel at Robin Hood’s Bay is fully booked and York YHA and Whitby YHA are double the price over the Bank Holiday weekend.

There are of course plenty of other accommodation options in Scarborough and Whitby if you want a bit more comfort.

Scarborough is about a 3 hour train journey from Kings X (Change in York).

Malton is on the railway line between York and Scarborough and you could get to the start of the 100 in time if you took the very first train from Kings X.

Cheap train tickets usually come available 3 months in advance.  I will provide information nearer the time.

There is an hourly bus service between Scarborough and Whitby passing Robin Hoods Bay which takes about 40 minutes.

I will try and get our car drivers to transfer us from Malton to Fyling Hall as it would save quite a bit of time.  It is also a beautiful drive across the moors and takes about an hour.  If you are travelling by car and have places available that would be great.

There will be a chance for a Social Walk on Saturday afternoon and the Cleveland Way will make a nice change from the Capital Ring.

We will walk into Whitby and have time to explore the town of Dracula.

(No he did not come from Tranylvania!!)

The social walk on Sunday afternoon will explore the area round Robin Hoods Bay.  Each of the walks will be about 10 miles long.
