London LDWA

Hello everyone!

Welcome to Monday - but what a Monday it is, as a once-in-a-lifetime Supermoon fills our skies this evening!   That is, if 100% cloud cover doesn't obscure the view.   Anyway, make sure you drag yourselves away from Coronation Street and catch those perigee vibes (as we trendy types say) because if you miss it, the next one isn't until 2034.

Supermoon

This week's science lesson..
Cast your eyes skywards on Monday night!

But, keeping our feet more firmly rooted to the ground, we have a great walk lined up this week, but, as ever, a couple of Very Important Notices first...

1. Inaugural Capital Challenge 2017

A reminder that entries open TODAY (Monday 14 November) for the inaugural Capital Challenge hike, a 28 mile exploration of London, to be held on Saturday 1 April 2017.

Full details are on our website, which you can access by clicking here

Note that only 100 entrants will be accepted.   If more than 100 entries are received, a ballot will be held of those entries received up to 29th December.   If places remain available after 29 December, applications will be accepted on a first come, first served, basis

2 Photo Competition

Right!   Now that the days are getting shorter, it's time for you to spend one of those dark evenings by the fireside (does anyone actually still have cosy evenings by the fireside, by the way?) going through all the photos you've snapped on LDWA London events this year, and choosing your favourites.

Just pick a few of your best photos (up to five) and submit them to the competition by attaching them to an email replying to this newsletter.   There are various rules and regulations but the most important are that your photos must have been taken by an LDWA London primary or associate member on an LDWA London event during 2016.

There will be a vote of all LDWA London primary and associate members during December to pick the winner, and prizes will be awarded at the Xmas dinner.

You can see the photos that have already been submitted, and get all the details of the competition, on our website by clicking this link

So - what about this week's walk?

Well, if you're not sticking with the astronomical theme and coming on the "comets and curry" weekend away, don't worry because on Saturday, Jerome is leading what he describes as an "Effingham" good walk (and I'm sure it will be) exploring the commons and foothils of the mighty North Downs.   There's a pub lunch available for good measure, too, so if you'd like to go, make your way to Effingham Junction station for 09.15 on Saturday morning.   Please take a moment to read the special notice about dogs on this walk.

Well that's all for now.  Time to get the telescopes out and prepare for the evening's viewing.   But in the meantime, there's just time for you to read up on Saturday's walk.   All the details are on our website and are, as ever, reproduced below.

Have a great week

Adam
