Dear all
Well, slightly sadly, this week brings us into the start of the official LDWA "Autumn" walking season. But as those memories of summer slowly start to fade, there's lots to look forward to. In particular, the annual LDWA London "Founders" challenge event is beginning to loom larger on the horizon.
2016 Founders' challenge
This year the event is being held on Saturday 8 October and, as usual, it starts and finishes in Peaslake, Surrey. You can check out our website (click here) to find more details and to start planning your Autumn walking season.
I also recce'd the walk a couple of weeks ago and can confirm that the route is as stunning as ever, with a couple of minor adjustments compared to last year, which make it even more rewarding.
Pitch Hill toposcope, just after the start of the "Founders'" challenge, with the memorial plaque LDWA's founders - Alan Blatchford and Chris Steer
The route also passes the famous Tanner's Hatch youth hostel, where there is a memorial seat to Alan Blatchford. On the 9th to 11th September this year, the YH will be celebrating its 70th anniversary and a number of special events have been laid on to help celebrate the occasion. Turning to the more immediate future, as ever we've got two excellent walks lined up for you.
First of all, Marita will be exploring the woods and commons around Elstead and Chislehurst in her 7 mile linear walk on Wednesday. This sylvan stroll finishes up at Petts Wood where you will find no less than the Sovereign of the Seas. And no, that isn't a boat.. So if you'd like to join, just be at GROVE PARK station (note this is a CHANGE from "Strider") at 18.15 on Wednesday.
And then on Sunday, Peter will be posing some perplexing puzzles from Kent. His enigmatic walk starts at Marden station at 09.09 and you simply need to be there if you want to know where Ware is. Or even which Ware is where. There's a country pub lunch thrown in, too, so if you're seeking enlightenement, be sure to be there!
NOTE the London departure station and time for this walk have changed compared to "Strider". See corrected details on website and below.
So that's all for now, as they say. The full notes for this week's walks are below. Have a great week!
