London LDWA

Hello everyone

So it's down to earth with a bump, as Christmas passes and the 2016 rain streams down.   All we have to sustain our spirits, it seems, are the Easter eggs which have arrived already in our local branch of W H Smith.

But there is more than this to brighten our horizons!

First of all

Now that we are well into the new year, it seems like a good time to announce a new competition.   Yes I know it's only a few weeks since the last one, but you can never have too much of a good thing,   This time, though, it's a competition with a difference, as it will run all year.

So this is a "Best LDWA London photo of 2016 competition".

Basically, we're looking for the best photo of 2016, and to keep things as simple as possible, there are only a few rules:

Best LDWA London photo of 2016 competition

Rules

  • The photo must have been taken on an LDWA London event (social walk, weekend away, challenge hike or social evening)
  • It must have been taken in 2016
  • It must have been taken by an LDWA London Primary or Associate member
  • Any one member can submit up to five photos - if you submit five early in the year and want to submit another later in the year, one of the earlier ones will have to be withdrawn to restrict the total to five
  • The subject matter can be anything you like - scenery, people, amusing or serious but please try to keep it (reasonably) inoffensive..
  • If you have a photo you'd like to submit, just email it to london@ldwa.org.uk (or reply to this email) and it will be posted on the LDWA London website
  • There is a new page on the LDWA London website for the 2016 photo competition - click here.   As soon as entries are received, they will be posted there for all to see
  • The winner will be chosen by a popular vote of LDWA London Primary and Associate members, using a special on-line electronic voting system (NB this hasn't been invented yet but we are working on it...) starting on 1 December 2016
  • There will be an unimaginably fantastic prize for the winner (NB this hasn't been invented yet either) and the runner up.
  • Prizes will be awarded at the LDWA London Christmas Dinner in December 2016
  • Photos that are in the frame for a prize will be checked for authenticity - to check that the person submitting it actually took it, is an LDWA Primary or Associate member, was on the LDWA London event where it was taken, and against Google Images to check it hasn't been downloaded from an on-line source
  • More rules and regulations may be added at any time - hopefully this shouldn't be necessary but if it is, changes will be notified to members by email.

So - remember to take your camera on all your LDWA London outings, get clicking, and send in your best shots.   And by the way, Susanne has unwittingly already entered the photo competition - you can see her entry by clicking here.

And now  - down to the week's business

This week, we've got a particularly fascinating walk on offer.   On Saturday, Jane is leading a "1066 Classic" East Sussex exploration, visiting some of Harold's last haunts and taking in Pevensey and the actual site of the famous battle.   So if, like me, you didn't pay much attention in history lessons, now is the opportunity to fill in some of the gaps and see for yourself what all the fuss was about.   Just be at Battle station at 09.42 (take the 08.00 from Charing Cross, which appears to be departing slightly later than advertised in "Strider") on Saturday morning.

Note - because of ongoing engineering works, please check train times on the National Rail Website (click here) before you set off.

All the details of this week's walk are, as ever, below.

So, have a great week, stay dry (!) and whatever you do, don't forget your camera!
