Wednesday 7th May

Leamouth Evening Walkabout from Custom House to Canary Wharf

Event Type: Group Walk.

Region: Southern England / London

Distance: 6 miles

Start Time: 18:00

Route: Meet Custom House Station, Elizabeth Line. Based on an idea by Ron Williamson and lead as a midweek walk last year, the walk takes a look at the Leamouth Peninsula including City Island, Trinity Buoy Wharf, Virginia Quay and an old haunt of Horatio Nelson and friend before finishing at Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line Station. This walk is to the very edge of old Middlesex. The Lea was once the boundary between Essex and Middlesex

Notes: Trinity Buoy Wharf closes at 7pm. Therefore, could I ask you to be at the start before 6pm so that we can get underway without delay. There is an alternative meeting point about 6.40 at Canning Town station. Meet at the City Island exit at the top of the steps or lift. If you use this option please let me know at gdocallaghan@gmail.com. At the close of the walk, for those interested, a little time can be spent searching out some of the numerous art installations and sculptures around Canary Wharf. For those with other things on their mind, the Ledger Building will be close by

Broadstairs to Whitstable – part of Beach of Dreams

Event Type: Group Walk.

Region: Southern England / Kent

Distance: 24 or 17 miles

Start Time: 9:15 or 11:15

Route: Meet at Broadstairs Railway Station exit from platform 2 near ticket office 09:15 for 24 mile walk. Take the train at 07:20 from St Pancras or 07:27 from Stratford International arriving at 9.05. Buy a super off peak day return to Broadstairs for a route via Whitstable.
For a later start and shorter 17 mile walk – meet 11:15 for 11.30 departure from entrance to Turner Art Gallery in Margate at the top of the stairs outside the cafe. Take 09:20 from St Pancras or 09:27 from Stratford International arriving 11:00 at Margate and walk 15 minutes to the Turner Gallery or 5 minutes to the seafront outside the Bus café and wait for us there. We will come past at approx. 11:20 at the gallery (10 minute break there) and 11:40 at the Bus cafe. Please let Lonica know ahead of time if you plan to meet at either place in Margate.

The walk is on the England Coast Path. In the morning we walk on the promenade and concrete walkways beside sandy and stony beaches and under chalk cliffs. Lunch at Minnis Bay – drinks available. From there we walk on hard surface paths through coastal marshes and open farmland beside the sea to Reculver Fort, then on via Herne Bay to Whitstable train station where we would expect to arrive at 18:30 – 18:45

Notes: Paths are nearly all hard surface so wear supportive footwear. The walking pace will be 3.2mph average with a 10 minute morning and afternoon break and a half hour lunch stop. Picnic lunch required as cafes at Minnis Bay will be busy and we will just stop max 30 minutes

Whitstable to Sittingbourne – part of Beach of Dreams

Event Type: Group Walk.

Region: Southern England / Kent

Distance: 23 miles

Start Time: 9:30

Route: Meet at Whitstable Station main exit Take the train at 7.30 from London Victoria arriving at 09:22. Note: This includes a bus replacement service between Faversham and Whitstable. The walk is mostly on the England Coast Path. After leaving Whitstable we follow long straight paths between the marshes and the river estuary with big views. We go through the pretty town of Faversham and have our picnic lunch in a park on a rise in Oare. The afternoon has more long straight grassy paths along the river overlooking the marshes. The last 2 miles are through the light industrial outskirts of Sittingbourne.

Notes: Paths are nearly all earth or grass so wear supportive footwear as some stretches can be muddy if it has been wet. The walking pace will be 3.2mph average with a 10 minute morning and afternoon break and a half hour lunch stop. Picnic lunch required as there will be no café stops during the day. We would expect to catch the 18.45 train back from Sittingbourne.
