London LDWA

Dear all

Barely a day goes by without something exciting being on the agenda for the London LDWA.   This week we've got deer and azaeas, wild garlic and Ascension.

Yes really.   If you'd like to learn more about this unlikely combination, then read on..

On Wednesday, Roderick is leading his annual "Deer and Azaleas" hike from Richmond.   If you'd like to join him, all the details are below.   Just get yourself to Richmond station for 6:15pm.

Then on Saturday, Roderick is out again, this time in pursuit of wild garlic.   This vampire-defeating expedition sets off from Petersfield Station at 9:35 am.   Please note - Rod has discovered that the natural pub stop midway round the walk is hosting an event this weekend, so is not available for lunch.  So bring your own sandwiches instead, or call in at Marks & Spencer in Petersfield.   But by way of compensation, and for those of you who thought that Wetherspoons only existed in London, it turns out that there is one in Petersfield too.  Ideal spot for a bit of post-walk refreshment (or even pre-walk, if you're early..)

But before all this happens, on Tuesday, Douglas and Chris are giving a talk on what it's like to undertake a Challenge Hike, and then Adam (i.e. me) will be following up with a slideshow on a hiking trip to Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic, which I completed a couple of years ago.   To join this mind-expanding evening, be at the Vauxhall Griffin pub at 7:00 pm

All the details are below but here's a taster for what's in store!

Challenge Walks and Ascension Island

Tue 12 May 2015

Event Details:

The Long Distance Walkers Association

Hello

You are cordially invited to a social evening on Tuesday 12 May. Rather like old fashioned cinema shows, this will be a double bill.

First up, and the "B" movie, will be - "Everything that you wanted to know about Challenge Walks but were afraid to ask". This will not star Ronald Reagen but rather Chris Dent and myself. We will try to convince you that challenge walks are fun, and not scary intimidating events, and that you should take part in some. We will also give some tips on how to succeed at them.

Then the main attraction, starring our own Charlton Heston, will be Adam Dawson giving a talk on a recent walking visit to Ascension Island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.   If you’d like to find out what it’s like to hike in one of the remotest inhabited islands on earth – and to fly there with the RAF – then come along and learn something about a “trip with a difference".

This will take place at the Vauxhall Griffin, http://vauxhallgriffin.com/

It will start at 7.00 in the evening.

Hope to see you there.

Douglas Robinson
