NOTICE

1: New members

Welcome to the following new primary members: James Gordon, Silvia Delgado Ortiz and Jean Roberts. Nice to meet James on Saturday's walk

2: GPX files for social walks

At the Local Groups weekend recently it was reiterated what a valuable resource the Walks Database can be for oiur walks. Part of this is due to the presence of GPX files ofthe routes enabling people to try them for themselves or even use them as a tool for plotting their own walks. London group has a better than average record for uploading them but there are still plenty of gaps/ If you hacve been on a social walk and have a GPX file of it which you think might be of ouse we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Forthcoming walk

Berkhamsted Circular

Sun 26th Nov 2023

Distance
17ml.

Start Time
09.55 (Train 09.21 from London Euston arriving 09.55)

Route
Meet at Berkhamsted Station rear entrance (left at bottom of steps from platform).

The walk will visit Ivinghoe Beacon by way of Little Gaddesden and return to the station by way of Aldbury Common and Berkhamsted Common. The outgoing route is mainly undulating open country with good views and the return is on good forest tracks with many fine mature trees. Going underfoot is general OK but with mud in places. Near to the Beacon muddy steps are likely to be slippery, and exposed chalk might also be. There is a road alternative at that point. A Wetherspoons awaits the weary at Berkhamsted

General Notes

Torches must be carried as the walk could well end after dark and, in any case, the tree canopy will cut the light. Toilets should be available at Berkhamsted station and at the National Trust cafe on Aldbury Common. Packed lunch required. Darkness comes early and stops will be limited. Pace 2.5 to 3mph

Meanwhile the lure of a walk through London's squares proved suprisingly popular.

Gavin managed to rack up the same number of squares as walks he's led for the group by the end
