NOTICES

1) New Members: Welcome to  the following new Associate member: Patrycja Mularonek.  Associate members please do share any photos from the walks you do in your local area either on the London group Facebook page or direct to me for our Out and About section of the newsletter.

2) Founders 2023 – REQUEST FOR MARSHALL’S - SATURDAY 21 October 2023 The Founders Challenge Walk is taking place on Saturday 21 October this year, entries for the event have been open since 1st June. We need volunteers for the HQ and the 3 checkpoints. In addition to our loyal, repeat marshals we need more people to ensure the event goes well. The HQ is key as it is the start and finish point and we serve meals to the returning walks. Although the day is form 07.00 to 19.00 volunteers are welcome to do shifts. For further information please email: chris.founders.challenge@gmail.com. Information which is helpful to share to Chris is: mobile, available times, are you travelling by car, are you pacer trained, are you a first aider and what you would like to do on the day.

3 UPCOMING COMMITTEE VACANCIES  1) Founders Challenge Event Director: after an amazing tenure as event organiser Chris Blackwell is stepping down.  For more information please contact Chris on the email above.  2)  Newsletter Editor  after 3 years, I will be stepping down at the end of September and am more than happy to talk though what is required and how to do it.  Please contact me via the London LDWA email address.

4) Scheduled walks: You will have noticed that the walk programme has been subject to last minute cancellations and additions due to the weather.  Please do keep updated via our website when the current programme is published  here

Given the unpredictability of the weather it is strongly advised that members bring full waterproof gear (top and bottom) that can withstand torrential rain.  It is also recommended that a change of clothes is carried as it is no fun returning home on public transport whilst damp and bedraggled.

5)  Wild Camping and Dartmoor  Update here

The leader wants to go to tonights Prom Concert but he has totally forgotten where the Proms take place. So he is going to walk past all the 12 main concert halls in London till he finds the right one. If it is the Barbican it will be a very short walk! But potentially we will be searching through the City, into Finsbury, over to the South Bank, through Covent Garden & the West End, & even, if it goes to the whole ten miles, out to Kensington. (Please do not tip him off by googling or doing anything like that, it will spoil the suspense.) You do not, of course, have to attend the Prom

General Notes
The leader will provide instructions to nearby pubs, tubes etc towards the end of the walk. But if you do want to attend, please text the leader no later than the day before the walk. He will be buying himself a standing ticket for 8 pounds on the morning of the concert. There might be availability on the night but this cannot be guaranteed as seats are already nearly sold out. The programme is Ligeti, Beethoven, Shostakovich, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko. Yes he is Russian but he declines to work in Russia during the Ukraine war.

Recent LDWA Walks

Notwithstanding the awful weather we have been having recently a few hardy soles have been out on social walks.  The first set of photos are from Gavin's Is it Far? walk from New Cross to Greenwich.  At the time they were starting it was torrential rain a few miles away but they seem to have dodged the worst of the weather.

The final photo is from Jerome's B 2 B Adventure 20 miles from Bushey to Berkhamsted which again exceeded expectations in terms of the weather.
