Cumbria
The object behind this adventure is to plan your own journey within a framework of grid references. The route therefore will suit all individual challenges and interests, as the planning is left to you. You decide whether to attack a rock climb on your route or wander easily along a ridge path.
As the framework is rigid your ultimate goal is the same - to complete a one hundred mile circuit round the Lake District. You can conquer as many two thousand foot peaks as you want, forty is a realistic total.
The route will obviously be a serious undertaking and however well planned is NOT for the inexperienced. Its aim is to provide a worthwhile challenge to an increasingly urban based population who need to get away from our cities. It does provide challenges far in excess of the Yorkshire Dales Centurion Walk - but it is still based on the same concept of a hundred-mile circuit.
Your walk will be called the Trident Walk because it takes in the three highest Lake District peaks - The Scafells, Helvellyn and Skiddaw.
The free download of places on route and schematic maps is by kind permission of Jon Ginesi, whose publication for this walk is currently out of print. It is hoped that it will be reprinted in 2008.
NB from e.g. Wasdale Mountain Rescue (https://www.wmrt.org.uk/advice/accident-black-spots/scafell-broad-stand/):
"Broad Stand – There is no easy route direct from Scafell to Scafell Pike! ... Broad Stand is the series of rock steps and slabs which link Scafell to Mickledore on Scafell Pike. It has been described as a scramble but has moves of rock climbing difficulty above large drops and an unforgiving landing – in the event of a fall. ... [I]n full winter conditions descent into this area is extremely hazardous as soft snow on Scafell summit might turn into hard frozen neve on the steep north and east aspects in the space of a few metres. ... Broad Stand is an extremely dangerous area which has unfortunately seen a number of fatalities."
July 2024: minor change of route to Grisedale Pike west of Braithwaite (direct route up contours no longer available)
