Canon's Canter

Essex, Suffolk

56 km / 35 miles
From the cathedral in Chelmsford paths beside the river Chelmer are used to leave the city. The small villages and hamlets of Little Waltham, Fuller Street and Black Notley lead to the town of Braintree. Once back in open countryside field paths are taken to Sible Hedingham and Castle Hedingham which still has its castle. The villages of Little Yeldham and Belchamp St Paul are skirted before reaching Clare Castle Country Park with the remains of the 13th century castle set high on its impressive motte.

This route was originally developed in 2007 as the first part of a pilgrimage walk known as 'Canon's Canter to Bury'. From Clare the Bury to Clare Walk was used to reach Bury St Edmunds.
