Walking the Disused Railways of Sussex

Surrey, W Sussex

55 km / 34 miles
Walking the Disused Railways of Sussex includes a 34-mile route (and 12 other shorter routes) between Shoreham-by-Sea to Shalford, via Christ’s Hospital, linking the Adur and Wey river valleys, as well as describing other walking routes on the past converted trackbeds.

From Shoreham this uses the old railway route, now a multi-user track providing generally level walking, along the Adur valley through the gap in the South Downs to Steyning then across the Sussex weald via Henfield and Partridge Green, to Southwater and Christ’s Hospital, then to Rudgwick, reaching the Wey river valley after Cranleigh, passing Bramley to the finish. Much of the route is coincident with the Downs Link, and later the Wey-South Path after Cranleigh.

Most of the route is marked on OS mapping as a cycleway and as the Downs Link, that is waymarked.

This route provides a north-easterly route across Sussex from the coast that links the Adur and Wey valleys, while the Arun and Wey valleys can be linked by a more westerly route using the Arun Navigation (Wey and Arun Canal) to again reach the Wey-South Path at Cranleigh.
