River Tyne Trail - River South Tyne

Cumbria, Northumberland

64 km / 40 miles
The River South Tyne section of the River Tyne Trail from Tyne Head to Warden at the confluence of the two Tynes just before Hexham

The whole 135-mile walk passes through a wonderful variety of terrain and scenery leading from close to the Pennines in Cumbria and the Cheviots in Northumberland. It encompasses Northern Europe's largest man-made lake, vestiges of Roman, early Christian heritage and railway history as well as the regeneration and transformation of one of the world's most foremost shipbuilding regions.

UPDATE: October 2025
DIVERSION - Dryburn Bridge, between Alston and Garrigill, is currently closed due to flood damage. The alternative route will add very little time or distance to your route. Details of diversion route at: https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/short-routes/dryburn-bridge-closed-follow-diversion/
