Kentish Thames Walk

Kent

66 km / 41 miles
The walk is not way-marked, but it is all on rights of way. It can be done as a long distance walk, on its own, or as a grande finale to a walk from the source of the Thames, or in manageable day trip segments of between 7 and 10 miles. It is fully public transport accessible. Maps and GPX files are provided.

As a walk it is unique. En route you will see dramatic engineering, such as the Dartford bridge and a footpath that leaps over a chasm, quirky objects, such as an abacus in a scrapyard wall and a home made war memorial, historic buildings and wild open spaces. Almost always you will be accompanied by the mighty Thames at its most majestic and awesome.

The walk is a naturalist’s and Dickens enthusiast’s delight. It passes a number of places mentioned by Dickens, including the famous Egypt Bay where Magwich was imprisoned in Great Expectations. Two RSPB bird reserves are on or near the route. Students of history will love historic Gravesend and the numerous historic forts that are passed.

The walk can be used to extend the Thames path national trail to a 'proper end', or to link between the Thames Path and the Saxon Shore Way.

An alternative to the England Coast Path route.
