Viking Way

Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Rutland

The Viking Way is a 149 mile long walking route through Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland. The route opened in 1976 and its name recognises the influence of the Norse invaders on the east of Britain. The route is clearly marked with the recognisable viking helmet on the yellow disc.

The Way passes through a wide variety of landscapes, including:

The banks of the River Humber
The rolling chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape
Historic market towns such as Caistor, Horncastle, and Woodhall Spa
The city of Lincoln, where the route passes the cathedral, castle, and descends the famous Steep Hill
The Lincoln Cliff escarpment with expansive views
The Witham Valley, fenland, woodlands, and quiet villages
The countryside of South Lincolnshire before finishing at Oakham in Rutland, where it links with the Macmillan Way and the Hereward Way.

The Way is promoted by Lincolnshire Council on their Visit Lincolnshire website below. 2026 marks its 50th anniversary.
