Web Page of South Manchester Group

Welcome to the Web pages of the South Manchester Group of the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Social Walks Resumed

As of 26th Aug 2020 social walks can be resumed for a maximum of 30 people (max number at the discretion of the leader). Please check with the leader first. Also please read the latest COVID-19 notes on the LDWA main page. Walk leaders must provide a risk assessment  and note the names and membership numbers of all participants.

Please check our walks list on our Future Events page. For some reason not all of these walks are shown on the LDWA group walks maps.

The group covers southern Greater Manchester, Mid & East Cheshire in the North West of England. We have a varied programme of social walks which is published in Strider and on this website - see "Future Events". Any member of the LDWA can walk with us and can if they wish select South Manchester as their local group. Prospective members of the LDWA are welcome to join in with our social walks for a trial period, but should be aware that walks are around 20 miles at a reasonable pace (8 hours approx) and that it is advisable to make contact with the leader beforehand to confirm details. 'Robbie's Strolls' are of about 10 miles in length and are at a lesser pace. Evening walks are about 6 miles long and usually followed by a brief pub stop (COVID permitting).

If you have news items, photos, or any other local topical material that would be of interest to others please send it to Duncan Smith (local), Website (national), or Editor (Strider magazine).

Note: All extra material will only be added to this site with the approval of the LDWA South Manchester Group Committee.

1) Watch your footing, especially on muddy ground and on wet limestone slabs. Take Care over stiles (which can be wet and slippy) and do not fall off them.

2) Carry a map and have a reasonable idea of your location.

3) Be equipped for any probable weather, be it forecast to be hot, cold, wet or windy.
