West Leeds Green Gateways Trail

W Yorkshire

34 km / 21 miles
This trail takes you on a journey through some of the parks and green spaces in the west Leeds area. Throughout the trail you will visit important historical sites and pass through / by different wildlife habitats such as woodlands, wetlands and meadows.

The trail starts at Granary Wharf in the centre of Leeds and follows the Leeds Liverpool Canal west towards Rodley giving fine views of Kirkstall Abbey. At Apperley Bridge the trail leaves the canal and coincides with the Leeds Country Way to drop down through a chain of woodlands into the Fagley Beck valley. The trail follows the valleys to the west and south of Pudsey and follows Pudsey Beck to Roker Lane Bottom. Here the Leeds Country Way is left and several alternative routes are available for the return to Leeds.

The main route follows Pudsey Beck north and round Post Hill to Upper Armley. Here the Leeds Liverpool Canal is joined back to Leeds city centre.

A series of five downloadable leaflets feature a map of each section along with background information about sights on or near the path.

The West Leeds Country Park and Green Gateways Initiative that promotes this route is located on the west side of the City of Leeds and covers an area of approximately 3889 hectares that forms a green horseshoe around the west Leeds conurbation. The trail helps you explore the green spaces and corridors in west Leeds which have a rich local and natural history. The green corridors are important routes used by our wildlife to colonise new green spaces and for sources of food during migration periods. In turn the corridors are a great way to access the wider countryside avoiding busy roads and large residential areas.
