Close to the start the route passes the Grade I listed church of St Peter on the Wall, built in 654 on the site of a Roman fort. The Blackwater Estuary is followed with views of Osea and Northey Islands. The Hythe Quay in Maldon is home to many of the remaining Thames barges.
