The route initially follows the infant River Stort along the border between Essex and Hertfordshire as far as Ford End. From there the small hamlets of Starling's Green and Stocking Pelham and the village of Farnham are passed on the way to Bishop's Stortford. The River Stort Navigation is then followed to Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire.
