The Green Chain Walk is a collection of eleven linked routes between the River Thames and many of South-East London's open spaces. It can be started from the Thames Barrier or Erith riverside, and offers several route variations as it passes through Oxleas Wood and Mottingham to terminate at either Crystal Palace or Chislehurst. The 'daisy chain' layout offers many options for circular and linear walks.

Though there is inevitably some street walking, there is a surprising amount of woodland, grassland, park and garden and some interesting heritage sites are passed, such as Eltham Palace.

The route plotted on our map represents the north-east to south-west extent of the walk, and it is made up from sections 1, 3, 6, 8, 10 and 11 out of the 11 sections, but excludes some loops in these sections. This is a simplified spine route but it does not show the many options that the network offers due to limitations of the mapping used on this site.

The total network, excluding links to stations etc, totals about 50 miles in the Transport For London (TfL) website details linked below. There are free downloadable route descriptions with mapping for all of the sections on the TfL website. The network is signed throughout, but as there are many options, care is needed in following it to keep to the chosen route.

Between Maryon Park, Charlton and Crystal Palace some of the route is coincident with the Capital Ring, and at the Thames riverside it links to the Thames Path and the Thames Path Extension, that are also signed routes.
