Churnet Way

Staffordshire

A varied walk with moorland, canals, disused railway lines, woods and open countryside.

The route starts from the Winking Man pub on the A53 Buxton - Leek road in the Staffordshire Moorlands, close to the source of the River Churnet. It crosses Ramshaw Rocks, with far-reaching views, before skirting the market town of Leek. Pleasant canal walking leads to the village of Cheddleton, with its 18th century flint mill, and on to Froghall where the canal ends. Woodland sections lead towards the village of Oakamoor where a disused railway track is picked up to reach Denstone, passing the Alton Towers Theme Park on the way. From Denstone the route passes by the lake of the JCB World Headquarters at Rocester. A section of roadside walking leads to the final field section where the River Churnet flows into the River Dove.
