Don't worry, I'm not going to make a habit of reviewing books in this weekly Newsletter, but here's one I can thoroughly recommend: In Praise of Walking, by Shane O'Mara. The author is a neuroscientist as well as a very enthusiastic walker, and the book contains riveting details about the beneficial effect walking has on our grey matter and our well-being. A couple of quotes:
'Walking together can be one of the best experiences of walking. Social walking - marching in concert and with purpose - can be an effective goad for real change in society.'
'You don't get old until you stop walking, and you don't stop walking until you're old. Lots of regular walking, especially if conducted at a high tempo, with an appropriate rhythm, forestalls many of the bad things that come with ageing.'
Perhaps we should invite him to try the Capital Challenge...
One more thing before I get on to details of this week's walk - apologies for the mistaken identity in last week's photo caption. It was Melissa, not Isobel, doing the zapping with Gavin.
Now for this week's walk, which is on Saturday and features a Haywards Heath start, a Three Bridges finish, and a lunch at Balcombe (most probably) in between.
Happy walking!
