Happy Monday, everyone!
Well now that we're well into spring and the last equinoctal storm has been despatched before we reached the end of the alphabet, we're starting to get back into our two-walks-a-week rhythm.
So this week we've got two great walks lined up - of which more details below - and the twice a week schedule continues right through most of the summer now. In fact, eagle-eyed watchers of the LDWA London website will have noticed that one of the few remaining gaps in the programme has been filled by a pop-up walk on the evening of Tuesday 19 April (more details by clicking here). So time to awaken the boots from their winter hibernation and get walking.
Turning to this week's events..
First of all, on the evening of Wednesday (6 April), Dick will be leading us on what promises to be a rather exotic journey through the "Playground of Kings" which, rather conveniently for us, happens to be located just next to the Docklands light Railway. To join in this royal romp (hmmm... that does sound rather like a Daily Mail headline), just join Dick at Island Gardens DLR at 6pm on Wednesday evening. There are a couple of photos below of sights along the way, just to whet your appetites:
Getting ready for Adele's next excursion?
Has our Treasurer been here before us?
Then, next weekend, on Saturday (9 April), Jerome will be following on the royal theme with a Sussex sojourn from Robertsbridge to Battle, tracing out Harold's journey, 950 years ago, to meet his fate at Hastings. If you'd like to follow in the footsteps of Harold's army, just get to Robertsbridge station for 09.52 on Saturday morning. You probably won't need fully body armour, but a cagoule might come in handy just in case the forecasters change their minds and Lawrence is indeed waiting hot on the heels of Katie... [NOTE the new train times compared to "Strider" - slightly later]
Well after that riot of royal rambling, it's time to sign off. Have a great week, and don't forget to check out all the details of this week's walks which, as ever, are set out below.

Route
Meet Island Gardens DLR. (DLR - frequent service) The full Isle of Dogs (TDGT) excursion is nine miles, taking us up the little-explored East Coast, through the East India Dock Basin nature reserve and along the optimistically-named Orchard Place to London's only lighthouse (now repurposed as an arts studio/venue). We then return across the financial wastelands via Crossrail Gardens before a moonlit stroll down the West Bank viewing the Great Eastern slipway, with optional end-of-walk refreshments in the Ferry House pub.
Depending on the weather, the drawbridge, and the will of the group there are numerous dropout points. We're also in the hands of gatekeepers, so departure is going to be promptly at six.
No mud and no stiles, but we do negotiate a mechanical hill. Sadly, the King's hunting dog kennels are long gone.
