Here be Dragons
Tuesday 12th September 2023
Region / Area
Southern England / London
Route
Meet at London Bridge Station outside Exit/Entrance 3 on the junction of Joiner Street and Tooley Street
The City of London is guarded by 14 watchdragons. These fearsome beasts stand over the major routes into the City, and are 3D representations of the dragons that feature on the City coat of arms. Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom still observed in parts of England and Wales, which traditionally involved swatting local landmarks with branches to maintain a shared mental map of parish boundaries usually every seven years. Join me as we replace swatting with counting the dragons as we Beat the Bounds of the City of London. The walk starts & finishes at London Bridge station & along the way we will hear mention of Nancy from Oliver Twist, Winchester geese, Shakespeare, Samuel Pepys parmesan, a President of the USA & more depending upon time available
General Notes
This will be a fun walk with Des Garrahan from the Ramblers. Des leads the Ramblers work with Transport for London on its plans to improve walking in London & will be seeking members views on this route & walking in London generally. We will pause about halfway for a short refreshment break. When we finish about 9, we will pop into a local pub, where we hope you can join us. Leaders are Steve Radley & Des Garrahan (07592 759981)
