NOTICES

1) Founders 2023 – REQUEST FOR MARSHALL’S - SATURDAY 21 October 2023 The Founders Challenge Walk is taking place on Saturday 21 October this year, entries for the event have been open since 1st June. We need volunteers for the HQ and the 3 checkpoints. In addition to our loyal, repeat marshals we need more people to ensure the event goes well. The HQ is key as it is the start and finish point and we serve meals to the returning walks. Although the day is form 07.00 to 19.00 volunteers are welcome to do shifts. For further information please email: chris.founders.challenge@gmail.com. Information which is helpful to share to Chris is: mobile, available times, are you travelling by car, are you pacer trained, are you a first aider and what you would like to do on the day.

2) CALL FOR NEW WALKS LEADERS Walks Secretary Jean O’Reilly is pulling together the schedule of social walks for August and beyond. If you fancy leading a walk, we are looking for short midweek walks (7-ish miles, evening or daytime) and longer weekend walks (20+ miles). It would be great to have some new walk leaders – we currently rely heavily on a small group of hardworking leaders. Here is an outline of the process:

To confirm a walk we need to know Name of walk Date and start time Distance Start location / End location Basic route details Your preferred contact details -- this can be an email address or phone number. If you would like to limit numbers and have people register in advance for your walk, you can request this too. You can also let people know additional details, for example lunch stops, pub stops, if dogs are allowed. We ask leaders to recce the walk in advance; however, this could have been done a few months earlier. Once you have completed the walk we ask that you provide a register of the walk attendees (for insurance purposes), a gpx file of the walk (if you have one) and a brief walk report. Plus any photos so that it can all be uploaded to our website. If you might be interested or want more information, please contact Jean on london.walks@ldwa.org.uk. Contacting Jean will not commit you to providing a walk.

3) STARS OF THE WEEK   There are a veritable posse of potential stars this week,  all those who went on Gavin's Midsummer on the Thames where everyone walked at least 21 miles and in some cases much more (40.2 miles Windsor to Clapham Junction) on a really hot and humid day.  A shout out to  Nicola Bleasby for doing her longest-ever walk of 58km on her first walk with us merits a mention, and Emma Dowling and Jeff Golland for doing the whole 40miles. Also a star for Francis Thomason, who met those still walking yesterday at Chiswick Bridge (not me) and provided them with much-appreciated food and drink at a very timely point.

It is good that the allocation of stars is at the editors discretion. However if only one was to be awarded then Cathy Phillips for completing the Pennine Way in 16 days would be the bookies favorite.  She described her relationship with the trail as a "sort of love/hate relationship " and it is not one she will do again

Recent London LDWA Walks

A few photos from 2 of our recent walks, the first from Ron's Summer Solstice Saunter where 21 walkers strolled through parks, along canals and took in the vibrant, summer evening culture.

The second set of photos are from Gavin's epic Midsummer on Thames a linear walk from Windsor until you drop (which was anything up to 40 miles).

Converted Boat Houses

Many wonderful Thames side properties were spotted on the the epic walk from Windsor to Clapham Junction.  This caught the eye as it was a renovated and repurposed boat house.
