28, a “Perfect Number” for a perfect English summer day with a perfect group of fellow walkers in delightful Suffolk for this joint walk for 3 groups.
The Wool Towns Walk and the St. Edmund Way remind us of the source of wealth and the pilgrimage aspect of the area.
Highlights of the Day
  • The train ride from Marks Tey to Sudbury, the Victorian station at Chappel and Wakes Colne, the floral display at Bures station vividly explained thanks to Steve.
  • Gainsborough house in Sudbury and sections of the Gainsborough Trail.
  • The Valley Walk the old train line which connected the 3 towns of our walk, the station at Long Melford still intact.
  • The glorious wool town churches at Long Melford and Lavenham, appreciated externally as weddings were happening internally
  • The magnificent avenue to Kentwell Hall and the “Life in Tudor England” festival partially seen from the gates.
  • An “Ad hoc” section on a raised track which ended in a scramble down and provided an opportunity for Tilly to demonstrate a variation of the Orwellian mantra “4 legs good, 2 legs --- needs a supporting hand”.
  • The spectacular array of mediaeval houses in Lavenham leaning precariously at a variety of angles, all beautifully displayed in vivid colours.
  • The 2 mile walk down the High Street which demonstrated why Melford is Long.
We returned to Sudbury station in good time for our appointed hourly return train with a brisk walk down the final section of the old railway line. A perfect finish to a perfect day.
Suffolk did delight and there were lots of delights.
We will be back for more!
