Last weekend saw a number of marshals, including myself, trying out the two routes (18 miles and 26 miles) for this year’s Herts Hobble. We were very well supported by those who had volunteered to marshal the marshal’s walk. There is always a marshal’s walk associated with an event so don’t think if you offer to help on the day of a challenge event you won’t get a chance to try it yourself. We had good walking weather and the routes gave us great undulating Hertfordshire countryside and I’m sure will be enjoyed by over 170 entrants on 21st June.

In the last week we’ve also seen some of our committee gain a first aid qualification so we’re better able to provide support at events and on walks. It may be that we’ll look to run another course and train some marshals too.

Sun 28th Jun 2026 Still Searching For That Special Constable
Group Walk - 20ml. 9am meet at The Recreational Ground car park, School Street, Stoke By Nayland, CO6 4QY. ///riot.pursuing.indicated. Map: LR155. TL985364 for a meander through both Essex and Suffolk countryside taking in some of the very best of Constable Country. 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable and we will pass the setting for what is probably his best known painting The Hay Wain. We will have two short morning breaks; first at Stratford St Mary to rest our legs and then at Flatford Mill (public toilets/ NT shop) with the possibility of an ice cream paid for out of our funds. Our lunch break will be taken at Dedham after approx. 12 miles (public toilets/ shops/ café/ pubs). Sat 4th Jul 2026 The Mildmay Line
Group Walk - 18ml. 9.30am Stratford Place, seats in front of lift R of Pret A Manger, opposite Stratford Station’s Westfield exit/entrance. ///hunter.belly.farm. (GR TQ384845). We will be following the Mildmay overground line and passing by or very near all stations to Hampstead Heath, with the trains being frequent (Saturday every 10 mins) there are options for you to shorten the walk; by returning from or meeting at a station along the line. Also, as there is so much to point out on the route that is interesting or unusual Peter plans to give a small potted history as we go along and he hopes to produce a short written history/description of some of the places we pass, as well as more details of the route taken, with mileage and estimated times of our arrival at some stations.
