Only 4 weeks to go, the event has been full for some time.  We walked the route weekend of 18th November.  The route descriptions are below in docx and pdf format, hope there will be no more storms or last minute changes.  Don't forget your mug , Santa Hat and present for the Bran Tub.  Once again any withdrawals let me know so we can offer the places to the waiting list.  The GPX file is now live, I am not a GPX user and created this from my OS App, a couple of tiny gliches but it should be usable.

Saturday February 24th 2024 South Shropshire Circular

41st South Shropshire Circular

For the 41st edition of the South Shropshire Circular we are going on tour and popping just over the border into Wales where we will be starting from the CowShacc Scout Hut in Welshpool (Berriew Street, SY21 7TE, GR SJ223072) with parking in the adjacent Berriew St car park.

A challenging 27 mile route with 5000ft of ascent over scenic and testing countryside has been devised and as is traditional the route will be undisclosed until the day of the event when you will be given a clear and accurate route description. There is a 10 hour time limit. A short route may be applied if necessary.

We will welcome you in the hall from 06:45 for registration, a simple breakfast and issue of the Route Description. The route will be divided into 4 legs with 3 serviced check points providing refreshments. The route description will provide you the grid references of each checkpoint and a reliable indication of the best line between these. Please be aware the route description is written to be used in conjunction with OS Explorer Sheet 239 (Lake Vyrnwy and Llanfyllin) at 1:25 000. There will be a map inset on the route description to get you onto the main OS map.

There will be a briefing at 07:55 and a mass start at 08:00. A hot meal, endless tea and a fine certificate will greet your return to Welshpool.

This is sheep country and we're sorry but dogs cannot be brought on this event.

We are also not able to accept entries from anyone under 18.

Clothing and equipment: For comfort and safety, you must wear or carry all of the items listed below and you will be disqualified either before or after the START, if any of them are obviously missing.

  • Mug (there will be no cups at checkpoints)

  • Walking boots or event/fell running shoes with sound well-studded soles.

  • Complete body and leg covering (running shorts with tights are OK).

  • Wind and waterproof outer protection shell, comprising a jacket and over-trousers.

  • Spare inner garment (such as a fleece jacket).

  • Hat and gloves

  • Survival bag

  • Emergency food and drink

  • Torch

  • Basic First Aid

  • Compass and whistle.

  • OS Explorer sheets 239 Lake Vyrnwy and Llanfyllin.

Entries open on 1St November 2023 at SI entries https://www.sientries.co.uk. Cost £11 for LDWA members, £16 for non LDWA. The cost of parking in the adjacent Berrview public car park is currently £5 for a whole day.

Saturday 27th April 2024. Corvedale Cake Walk.

The Corvedale Cake walk is a community challenge walk supported by Marches LDWA to raise funds for Holdgate & Eaton churches as they have previously been supportive of our events.
 
Entries open Monday 1st Jan 2024, closes Friday 19th April 2024. Si entries only.
 
Cost, £16 (22 mls) or £13 (10 mls).
 
Entry limit of 150, waiting list operative in event of over subscription.
 
Start: Holdgate Church TF13 6LW (GR SO561896). There will be clearly marked nearby parking.
 
 
Start time:
Holdgate Church will be open for registration from 0730.
Between 0800 & no later than 0900 for 22 mile walkers.
Between 0900 & no later than 1000 for runners & 10 mile walkers.
 
Route 22 miles: From Holdgate via tracks/fields to summit of Abdon Burf, traverse hill/valley to Clee St Margaret (CP), on to Munslow Park up/over Wenlock Edge to Eaton (CP), back on to Wenlock Edge passing Wilderhope before returning to Holdgate.
Route 10 miles: From Holdgate to Abdon Burf summit, across to Clee St Margaret (CP) to Tugford then across fields/lanes returning to Holdgate.
 
General notes:
Hot drinks at registration, full refreshments at CP’s ie cakes (of course!), sandwiches, drink and at finish hot dogs will be served.
Sorry, no dogs (livestock country).
Under 18’s must be accompanied by parent/guardian.
Please bring a mug.
In due course route descriptions will be accessible from Marches LDWA site for perusal and we encourage download (to save printing costs). To be used in conjunction with Explorer Map 217 (Longmynd & Wenlock Edge).
Participants to carry appropriate equipment for changeable weather conditions.
Both walkers & runners are welcome.

Who are we ?

Our members belong to the LDWA who live along the Welsh Marches and in the English Counties of Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Our group was founded in 1978 and we are proud in our history of having organised four of the annual "hundreds" that are the flagship events of the LDWA. These have been the Marchesman of 1990, The Shropshire of 1995, the Cant Canolbarth of 2007 and the Housman of May 2011.

LDWA Walks

The LDWA organises many challenge events and local group social walks, as well as listing many more organised by other organisations. Challenge events are normally between 20 and 100 miles and must generally be completed within a defined time limit. Social walks are normally led walks of around 20 miles.
