October 2025 Update
Welcome to the October Walks update.
I am pleased to advise that Chelle has come on board to help me with these monthly updates as I am starting to get writer’s block!

Hi, well autumn has well and truly arrived with muddy boots and waterproofs making a comeback. The group weekend in Oxford saw 14 members getting together with walks on 3 days and a variety of cafes and pubs as usual. There are some photos on our Facebook page Norfolk & Suffolk LDWA. The walks took in parts of 3 long distances paths in the area.( Oxford Greenbelt, Oxford Canal and Thames Bath.)
The same weekend we had members walking the Bullock Smithy a 58 mile romp around the peak district and also the 46mile 'Across Wales walk'. Seems we like to get about bit! Roy and David completed their SW coast path walks totalling 630 miles!
We had a few members venture in to Kent for the White cliffs 50 recently and talking of Kent they are hosting next years hundred mile challenge. If you are not walking it or fancy walking the marshals & helping out on the main event let me know and I'll add you to my list of awesome people! Our checkpoint will be around halfway at the Martindale Centre, Horsted Keynes. RH17 7ED. I plan to book accommodation for a long weekend although the checkpoint will almost certainly involve being up all or part of the night on the Saturday looking after 500 people. What better way to celebrate valentines than sharing the love manning a checkpoint on Saturday 14th or have a romantic evening gazing at the stars whilst walking it as a sweeper. Marshals have more love thou and we have 5 checkpoints to cover. All indoors thou so you needent worry about cold feet or icy silences, it's all warm hearts and happy endings for N&S marshals with a rewarding role and Jaynes finish food to dine on!

Group Walk - 19ml. 9:00 Southwold Common, near water tower, York Road IP18 6TB. (GR TM503762). A circular walk starting from Southwold Common, walking to Dunwich forest, Westleton Heath & Coastguard Cottages Dunwich Heath. Return back to Southwold via Walberswick. Please bring sufficient food & drink for the day.

Autumn Wednesday, Two Forest Traverse
Group Walk - 15.5ml. 9:30 Shakers Road, off B1106 near Brandon. Post code IP270SS. (GR TL792832). This walk is exclusively forest although the terrain & views are constantly changing. From the c.p we head along Shakers Road & complete a loop around Wangford Warren & into Brandon Country Park; cafe & toilets. This will be two-thirds of the walk complete. After the lunch break head towards Thetford Warren before deviating off towards Shakers Road. The terrain is easy throughout with limited undulation. Paths are good throughout

Down by the riverside (Waterbeach)
Group Walk - 16.00ml. 9:00 Starting from Waterbeach railway station, Clayhithe Road, Waterbeach, CB25 9HT.. (GR TL498651). A circular walk in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Starting from the railway station the route heads north along the River Cam to Wicken Feb (Cafe & Toilets). The route then returns south on the Lodes Way & Harcamlow Way to the finish at Waterbeach Station
General Notes
Just before the finish The Bridge Public House offers an opportunity for a cuppa & toilet stop before beginning your journey home

Group Walk - 19ml. 9:00 Meet by Mundesley Maritime Museum, 9 Beach Road, Mundesley, nearest postcode: NR11 8BG; what3words: animals.slices.kiosk. (GR TG311369). The route will take us initially along the coast to Overstrand then will go inland through the villages of Northrepps, Southrepps & Trunch; returning with a short stretch back along the coast.

Seasonal parking on the road, or behind All Saints Church/Coronation Hall, Cromer Road NR11 8BA, parking donations requested. Please do not park on the church c.p, which is at the front. Grid Ref: TG 3111 3691; what3words: noble.beards.drags Also parking opposite the Maritime Museum in Beach c.p (Parking charges apply) TOILETS There are public toilets in Mundesley at junction of Marina Road & Beach Road. If you are to use prior to walk start please allow time to ensure you are back at meeting point by 8.55am.

Autumn Wednesday, Kings Forest & Culford
Group Walk - 15ml. 9:30 Kings Forest c.p, off B1106 near North Stow. Post code IP286UR. (GR TL825747). We start from the Kings Forest c.p heading into the forest to pick up Angles Way/Icknield Way, & then for a short time on St Edmunds Way. We should reach West Stow in time for a lunch stop at the church where there are toilet facilities. We then head towards & through Culford school grounds (which is a public footpath) before picking up a byway on the western side of Kings Forest, & back towards the car park. Paths are generally good throughout although some could be muddy if we’ve had a lot of rain. There is a toilet at West Stow church, but no shops

Autumn Wednesday Shorty from Freston
Group Walk - 14ml. 9:30 Bottom of Freston Hill in long Layby next to River Orwell. Nearest Post Code IP9 1AB If coming from Ipswich direction pass the Oyster Reach & The Suffolk Food Hall on your Right. Continue along B1456 towards Shotley, the layby is on the left at the bottom of the hill.
Starting along the river towards Ipswich through the Park & nature reserve at Bourne Hill to Belstead & Bentley Woods and over to Alton Water, returning via the various woodlands back to Freston
General Notes
There are toilets within the first 2 miles. A pub stop at Tattingstone around lunch time. Please bring a packed lunch as although only 14 miles will probably be mid afternoon before we finish

Autumn Wednesday, West Stow Southbound
Group Walk - 16ml. 9:30 Ramparts Fields c.p, Icklingham Road (close to West Stow Country Park). (GR TL789715). Initially utilising parts of Icknield Way & Lark Valley path we head west & then south passing through Tuddenham & Herringswell. Just short of the A14 we will start to head back towards Cavenham & then Lackford & finally West Stow
General Notes
Paths are generally good throughout although some could be muddy if we’ve had a lot of rain. Please bring sufficient food & drink for the day. 09:30 start to allow extra time for weekday morning traffic. Toilets are available at nearby West Stow Country Park. A circular walk starting from Bungay & Waveney Golf Club, walking out to 'The Saints' & Homersfield using a section of the Angles Way. . Please bring sufficient food & drink for the day. Autumn Wednesday, Great Hockham
Group Walk - 15ml. 9:30 Great Hockham picnic site, A1075. Nearest postcode is IP24 1PA; this will take you to Great Hockham village not the picnic site so suggest you check the location prior to travel. Forestry England website gives details & map. (GR TL938919). We initially head south through & soon on the edge of the forest to pick up Hereward Way & then Peddars Way. We shall walk north on Peddars Way until we turn east through Great Hockham forest towards & into Great Hockham village. Lunch can be taken on the village green before an optional medicinal beverage at the Eagle pub. We then head out of the village along quiet roads passing Little Hockham before turning back through the forest to the c.p. Paths are generally good throughout although some could be muddy if we’ve had a lot of rain. Please bring sufficient food & drink for the day

Finally an important update re emergency contact details on walks.
Please can all walkers ensure that they carry their emergency contact details either stored in their phones or on a piece of paper readily available at the top of their rucksacks. If you are unsure how to store on your phone, google can be very helpful! For example “ICE for iphone” or whichever type of mobile you have will provide step by step instructions.
