June 2026 Update

Welcome to the June walks update. May has passed in a flash with the 100 marshal’s event early on and the main event just this last weekend. Having walked the marshal’s event I found it a much tougher route than of late however we were not faced with the blinding heat of last weekend which absolutely pushed people to their limits. Well done to everyone that took part what an amazing achievement!! This year saw the highest number of retirements on record mainly due to heat exhaustion/sickness. I really felt for everyone out there. What is apparent is those that completed it would not have done so without the extra support given at checkpoints. Volunteers on every checkpoint went that extra mile to try and combat heat stroke/exhaustion and encourage walkers to continue with novel methods of cooling such as providing iced water buckets to dunk heads and caps, ice lollies and plenty of hydration and TLC to the contestants. From a Norfolk and Suffolk point of view I just want to give a shout out to Chelle for achieving her 20th 100! Congratulations you crazy woman ...She also who threw herself into creating the most novel and themed checkpoint on the course. Walkers were met by Tigger, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore and Piglet and a hall completely decorated in the Winnie the Pooh theme. She even provided Vaseline for bums and Pooh corner for you know what!! Just what walkers needed to take their minds off the struggle. The grit and determination shown on the 100 coupled with the support and encouragement by the volunteers who all pulled together really showcases the heart and soul of the LDWA family. Away from 100 activities we also had five social walks throughout May including the AGM walk and meeting. We sadly said goodbye to Jayne Cook a longstanding member of the committee who has made an invaluable contribution to the club over the years. Also Ray Orman stepped down as secretary to be replaced by Tracy Woods. Thank you Ray you did a fantastic job! All the best to both of you and to Tracy for taking on the role. We now have a couple of vacancies on the committee. If anyone feels they would like to have more of a say and be more involved in the running of the club this can be a very rewarding role. We now have a number of dates reserved and we even have a choice of a Norfolk or Suffolk walk in one weekend! Finally I would like to put out a request for volunteers to help out on the Flower of Suffolk marathon 4th October 2026. OS Expl map 237. What three words: goad.beyond.chemistry. (GR TG229080). Something a little different! The plan is to take the X44 bus at 08:35 from Norwich to Aylsham & walk back to Norwich; the route is therefore linear. The full distance is approx. 21 miles but it can be cut short at Drayton (approx. 15 miles) & getting a bus back into Norwich. General Notes Paths along the route are varied but mainly good, landscape is varied. Please bring enough food & drink to last the entirety of the walk; there is however an opportunity to restock at Drayton. Wed 10th Jun 2026 Summer Wednesday - Diss south saunter Group Walk - 16ml. 9:30 Roydon village hall, High Road, Roydon, Diss, IP22 5RB. Park in the village hall carpark (permission has been given). No charge W3W: humans.reporting.panel. (GR TM100802). The route is mainly farmland and meadows, passing through several villages. From our start point we head towards Wortham Ling and onto Redgrave. Next is Hinderclay at which point we turn southeast to reach the twin villages of Botesdale and Rickinghall. This is the intended lunch stop with an optional drink at the Bell Inn. We then cross under the A143 generally heading north east towards Wortham. There is then a long straight stretch back to Wortham Ling and retrace steps back to Roydon village hall General Notes Paths along the route are varied but mainly good. Most of the route is on open farmland and meadows. Please bring enough food and drink to last the entirety of the walk; there is however an option to stop at the Bell Inn in Rickinghall (approx. 10 miles). Sun 14th Jun 2026 Summer Poppyline Shortie in Reverse Group Walk - 18.5ml. 9:00 Car park Roman Camp. Camp Lane, Runton, West Runton, North Norfolk, Norfolk, England, NR27 9NE Please car share and park with consideration of other users as quite a small car park.. (GR TG184413). This is the 2022 short poppyline route in reverse. Leave Roman Camp car park head out to the coast and over Beeston Bump, through Sheringham Park, Gresham, Felbrigg Hall, Cromer and back via East Runton General Notes No toilets at start but break will be at Sheringham Park and lunch at Felbrigg Hall where are both cafes and toilets. However I would suggest bringing your own food for the day as the break/lunch will be the usual N&S length and not extended. Sat 27th Jun 2026 Group Walk - Details to follow nearer the time Sun 28th Jun 2026 Still Searching For That Special Constable - Joint E&H/N&S Group Walk - 20ml. 9:00 Meet at The Recreational Ground car park, School Street, Stoke By Nayland, CO6 4QY. ///riot.pursuing.indicated. Free parking Map : LR155. (GR TL985364). A meander through both Essex and Suffolk countryside taking in some of the very best of Constable Country. We will have two short morning breaks; first at Stratford St Mary to rest our legs and then at Flatford Mill (public toilets/ NT shop) with the possibility of an ice cream. Our lunch break will be taken at Dedham after approx. 12 miles (public toilets/ shops/ café/ pubs) General Notes 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable and we will pass the setting for what is probably his best known painting The Hay Wain. A hay wain being a cart traditionally used to transport freshly cut meadow grass. Constable is less well known for his depictions of people and also for his religious paintings - in fact he painted just three - and the best of these, The Annunciation, hangs in St Mary’s church Dedham. The church should be open for us to take a peek. This Special Constable is occasionally on exhibition loan and if that proves to be the case, we have another special constable up our sleeve - or possibly on the wall! Sat 11th Jul 2026 Challenge Event - 31, 23 or 13.5ml. 11.5. Needham Market Community Centre, School Street, Needham Market, IP6 8BB Parking at the Community Centre for the Long and Medium routes. For the Short route, please use the free parking in Station Yard or at Needham Lake, only a short distance from the community centre for the Long and Medium routes. For the Short route, please use the free parking in Station Yard or at Needham Lake, only a short distance from the community centre The Rodent Wriggle is named after the way it meanders its way up the upper reaches of the River Rat. A gentle undulating scenic route through the Mid Suffolk countryside, with 10 historic churches along the 31.5mile route. All are interesting in their own way, but of particular note are Great Finborough with its majestic spire, quaint thatched Harleston Church, and Rattlesden Church with its magnificent Angel roof General Notes This event is ‘scan & go’. There will be refreshments at all checkpoints and a light meal at the finish. Dogs are allowed on the event, but not allowed inside any hall (except assistance dogs). All dogs must be on leads at all times & must have appropriate liability insurance. Sun 19th Jul 2026 Group Walk - 18ml. 9:00 Mill Road carpark, Aylsham, Norfolk, NR11 6DU. No charge. OS Expl map 238. What three words: landed.afternoon.roosters. (GR TG191267). This is a figure of eight walk first looping around Blickling and then around Aylsham. There is an easy option to reduce the walk down to approx. 12 miles if required. General Notes Paths along the route are varied but mainly good, landscape is varied. Please bring enough food and drink to last the entirety of the walk; there is however an opportunity to restock at Blicking, albeit at National Trust prices! The group can however stretch to an ice cream! Sat 22nd Aug 2026 “Suffolk Delights” Sudbury circular-Led by London Group Group Walk - 20ml. 9:20 9.20 at Sudbury station. Car parking at station. Train users take the 8.02 from Liverpool Street (8.09 at Stratford, 8.25 at Shenfield) and change at Marks Tey. (GR TL877410). Long Melford and Lavenham to admire the 2 famous wool town churches with a plentiful supply of ice cream and an opportunity to explore Gainsborough’s town General Notes Bring picnic, plenty of water and food. Moderate pace. Please let Leader know, ideally via WhatsApp or text, if you wish to come; ideally the day before so he can update you if there are any necessary changes to travel details or the route.
