A Wark Too Far 10th Sep 2023

Eight Cumbria members and two Northumbrian members met at Birtley church and departed at 08-36 into a foggy section of field paths heading towards Tone Hall by which time the sun had appeared and it was now on the hot side. After crossing the A68 at the now closed Tone Inn pub we were pleased to get into a forested section of Birney Hill and some shade, after this a change of direction and a minor road section we had a lunch stop at Colt Crag reservoir.

After this it was evident that the day was changing, thunder and lightning was forecast but not until about 17-00 by which time we would be finished, but the sky was telling a different story and it wasn’t long before the rumbling started followed by the rain, light at first but by Gunnerton it was heavy and waterproofs were donned. The rain stayed with us passing Chipchase castle to almost the end, it had certainly been a walk of contrasts weather wise, but otherwise a good route.
