The Iron Coast 15th March 2026

On a blustery and driving rainy morning seven of us watched the waves crashing in and felt it was the kind of day that you didn't want to get out of the car!
After donning the waterproofs we set off with a good tail wind and the rain had abated for the time being as we followed the English Coast Path towards Workington,
then crossing the River Derwent before heading back towards the coast amongst the wind turbines.
It was at this stage when the waymarking became patchy but we knew that we had to aim for the foot crossing of the railway, this was located and we crossed into Siddick leaving the ECP.
At this point we picked up a cycle route along an old railway line which took us into Workington and Wetherspoons for our coffees etc. which was adjacent to our route.
Suitably refreshed we continued along the cycle way to High Harrington where we joined the main road to descend to Harrington and pick another section of disused railway and down to Harrington harbour were toilets and picnic tables were available for our lunch break, a dry but windy interlude.
At this stage we were back on the ECP running mostly beside the railway giving views of what was Workington Steel Works, now sadly all gone!
Across the railway and towards The Howe but the signage misdirected us a bit along the base of this mound instead of going up the steps, but at least we were sheltered from the wind until we rectified the error and ascended the mound and back into the wind but with the finish in sight.
On the morning I had intended to start the walk from the C2C light tower but due to the awful weather at that stage didn't, so to rectify that we finished at it where a group photo was taken then back to the cars just in time before the next shower started!
Stats 13 miles and approx 1,000ft of ascent.
