A Walk on the wild side

On May 15th 2022 six members gathered at Ravenstonedale for this walk led by Martyn Smith.

Leaving at 08-32 we were quickly onto field paths and lots of stiles but waymarking was good so these presented no problem.

After what seemed many stiles we came onto the Pennine Bridleway and followed this up to a col below Wild Boar Fell where we turned right and ascended to The Nab slowly as the very strong winds made the ascent that bit slower and harder.

After some photo’s from the airy viewpoint we returned to the col and descended into Mallerstang, leaving the PBW we followed sections of The Eden Way, Lady Anne’s Way and the Pennine Journey before having a lunch break near Pendragon Castle. After this we passed the ruins of Lammerside Castle and Wharton Hall then passing close to the old Kirkby Stephen East railway station using a foot bridge that was to be closed for a long period of time the following day for repairs.

Not long  after this we picked up the route of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route which was followed to very near Ravenstonedale and after 18.5 miles and 3.858ft of ascent finished at 17-02, eight and a half hours after we had started.
