Castles and Forts 20/03/2022

On above date eight members met up at Tyne Green Country Park at Hexham for an 18.5 mile walk being led by Barbara Young which started promptly at 08-30. After ascending from the riverside up to the Duke's House we then dropped down to Devil's Water and followed it to it's confluence with the River Tyne.

After crossing the river a short break was taken in Corbridge where some of the group availed themselves of coffee and cake from the bakers.

Suitably refreshed we headed North across the A69 and onto Aydon Castle then passing the remains of Halton Castle before reaching Hadrians Wall where we turned West passing the site of Onnvm Roman Fort.

It was after lunch near Port Gate that the Hadrians Wall route passed through an area where the recent gales had brought down a lot of trees, so much so we were surprised it was still open but it was and we climbed over, under and round these obstacles!

Staying with Hadrian's Wall we came to Heavenfields where St. Oswalds way starts, at this point we left the wall and headed South via minor roads and field paths to Acomb from where  after a couple of ups and downs the route took us back across the A69 and  to Tyne Green Country Park and finish.
