It was a crisp morning and nearly all of Cumbria’s active social walkers met up together in High Hesket.

We followed lanes and tracks and headed towards Blaze Fell, we took advantage of a new permissive path that is marked with several tall round fence posts across stocked fields to get to the top. The ruins at the top were fenced off as the ground is very uneven but lovely views all around. We were rather at the mercy of the wind on the tops as the access follows a steep ridge.

From there we made our first visit to Armathwaite. Crossing the Eden then going under the bridge we followed the river path through Coombs Wood. Spectacular autumn colours with most of the leaves still attached to the trees as this month had been unseasonably mild.

Ainstable Church for lunch and back by the river into Armathwaite again.

Going behind the Church up towards the station and then across fields towards Aiketgate. From there we meandered back to High Hesket.

A lovely looping walk that took full advantage of the footpaths and farm tracks.
